Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Thu, May 29, 2008 - 7:35 PMHalf an hour left.......just simply, simply amazing.
I won't have thoughts together for a while.
Interestingly though, the biggest question on my mind is the same biggest questions from last year's finale........
Who's in the coffin? -

Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Thu, May 29, 2008 - 8:20 PMAll I have to say is DUDE!!! Jeramy Bentham????!!!!! Ok what's up with the name? I think this is the discussion post so .... what's up with that?
I was kinda thinking that it was pretty much what we though was going to happen but that last bit made me go "what the ****". Just as I thought I was finally able to predict lost. BAM!

Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Thu, May 29, 2008 - 11:05 PMholy shit, amazing amazing. I loved that Walt made an appearance, that Hurley played chess with Mr. Eko, that Penny and Desmond were reunited. and That Jeremy Bentham is Locke. I need to start from the pilot all over again this is nuts.
And poor Sun! that was heartwrenching when Jin died.

The thing that is going to drive me craziest is figuring out what Kate's dream meant!!!

Thu, June 5, 2008 - 2:38 PM<<The thing that is going to drive me craziest is figuring out what Kate's dream meant!!!>>
Yeah...Kate's dream is all the more confusing given that the backwards speech on the phone said “The Island needs you. You have to go back before it’s too late,” (link: www.buddytv.com/articles/l...-20046.aspx ) and then Claire said "Don't you dare bring him back!"
Either this means that Kate is supposed to come alone and leave Aaron behind (which kind of makes no sense) or else there were two separate entites (Jacob and Claire? Locke and Claire? The Island and Jacob/Locke?) operating at cross-purposes.
Having Island-related nightmares (Kate, Widmore) and visions (Hurley, Jack) does seem to be a bit of an epidemic for those off of it, though. -

How about Jacob and Kate? I mean, it's a dream, not necessarily Island inspired. It could just be a deep desire or fear of Kate's. Maybe it just means she's succumbing to the Island's pull and she's worried what Claire will think. -

hmmm...do you *really* think it's that simple? that doesn't sound right for this show. -

Thu, June 5, 2008 - 4:28 PM> hmmm...do you *really* think it's that simple? that doesn't sound right for this show.
I don't think anything. I've largely stopped trying to predict what's going to happen (except for an occasional hunch). But it's possible.
Yes, the show is pretty complex. Do we really need to add complexity with our theories? I tend to prefer theories that are grounded in what we actually know. Some of the theories I've seen speculate wildly, bringing in a lot of stuff from other shows, movies, books, etc. While I recognize that the creators are influenced by other sources (as all creative people are), I don't think they are dependent on those sources. I mean, Locke is seen with "Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge" during one episode in the hatch, does that mean the whole show is in the head of a dying person?
As Freud said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." -

Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Thu, June 5, 2008 - 4:47 PMvery true, very true...i'm just trying to think of an episode where a manifestation of "dead" people, island whispers, and suchlike visions were *only* a dream. i can't think of any. not all of them have been explained or have a purpose, but i tend to believe that kate's "dream" phone call and claire's appearance have some purpose - other than just showing kate's subconscious hopes/fears. as one of the penultimate scenes, it seemed like some specifically designed foreshadowing.
just sayin'. not trying to be argumentative...not really. :-) -

Did Charlie's dreams about Aaron have a purpose? He got his ass kicked, but was that the purpose? You're probably right, and it certainly would be odd to include such a scene for no reason, but what it means is beyond me. -

Thu, June 5, 2008 - 9:10 PMCharlie's dreams about Aaron may have had meaning and purpose that we do not yet understand. Keep in mind this is a show that plants seeds seasons in advance of their payoff.

Thu, May 29, 2008 - 11:05 PMAwesome! Simply awesome. Finally a Desmond and Penny reunion! And finally we got to see who was in the coffin. I kept going back and forth between Michael and Locke. So glad to finally know. -

Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Thu, May 29, 2008 - 11:25 PMI just kept shouting at the tv "Ben!" Nope, Ben showed up. "Locke!" "Michael!" "Empty!"
Definitely need to rewatch tomorrow online.
Why do you suppose they named as temporary survivors Boone, Charlie and Libby over the others? Just randomly chosen? Did Hurley choose? They sound like Hurley choices. All this time we were waiting for two names, and we got three! Makes sense though as pre-Aaron, there would have been 8 survivors, 8 adults, so three more needed to make eight. I think I'm babbling. -

Thu, June 5, 2008 - 2:39 PMYup...it plays the commercial video again and solicits your email address for "recruiting" purposes. Presumably, more will be revealed at ComiCon in San Diego (which happens on the dates specified in the commercial).

The added footage of the press conference scene in "No Place Like Home, Part 1" which aired before the two hours finale last night. -

Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 3:48 PMOk so it was added footage. I watched last night and was perplexed, thinking "did I some how black out when watching 2 weeks ago?" something like that. Makes me feel better about my own sanity/attention span to know it was added footage re: the other 3 survivors. Woo! -

Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 5:52 PMi honestly thought Libby was an odd choice to throw into the mix considering she was a tailie. All the other survivors were sitting relatively close to one another, and it makes sense that they would hold onto each other and help each other to safety. Libby just doesn't fit here. (Not that a handcuffed 6 month preggers woman surviving makes sense either...)

Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 7:02 PMRegarding the three extra survivors- Boone, Libby and Charlie. The more I think about it, the more I suspect these were Hurley's choices. Charlie was his bestie, Libby his lady and Boone died naturally and innocently and also was the first real death among the Losties (not counting the OG carnage of the crash.) It makes sense that Hurley would name him, in honor like the other two. -

Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Thu, May 29, 2008 - 11:26 PMWow! I didn't see that ending coming!
I wonder if they'll shift the timeline next season to 2007, and the efforts to get back to the island, and show everything else in flashback, or whether the off-island scenes will continue to be in the future...
Also, one wonders if Locke has to be brought back to the island, will he be resurrected somehow? Hey it's Lost, anything can happen!
I give credit to the writers; they've really brought it up a notch this year and kept things amazingly interesting! -
-
Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Thu, May 29, 2008 - 11:56 PMThis is definitely the strongest season since season 1. Consistently gripping and surprising! And satisfying!! I think they've really avoided the X-Files pitfall of not giving enough answers to keep the audience engaged.
I think I read an article in the NY Times that said that the off-island stuff will now be the present in season 5. -

Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 12:54 AMJeremy Bentham was an interesting choice of names....
Here's the wikipedia entry on him:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Bentham
What's interesting is that the entry doesn't contain what I consider to be the most interesting thing about him - he came up with a prison design called the panopticon. Here's what it looks like:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panopticon
The design makes it so that the prisoners can't know whether or when they are being watched by the guards. For all they know, they are under constant surveillance. In reality, they may not be being watched at all. -

Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 3:54 AMMy mind is still reeling from the finale...and two hours was such a treat! There was just so much going on and I know I'm going to think of many other things to question periodically.
But my two biggest questions are: What ultimately happened to Locke? and Where exactly did the Island go?
My heart sank when Sawyer jumped from the helicopter. I immediately thought he was dead. And what do you suppose he said to Kate? Professed his undying love or something more?
Hurley gives new meaning to "I see dead people"...previous conversations with Charlie, playing chess with Mr. Eko?? And talk about the deceased making appearances: Claire popping up in Kate's dream, Jacob/Christian appearing on the boat to tell Michael "you can go now" and ...BOOM!
Ben gets more and more mysterious with each passing season. The most unlikely superhero/villain. Strong, smart, manipulative and a personna which makes me question his sanity over and over. Is he driven by the Island still? His own agenda which has yet to be fully revealed, or is it now simply a revenge thing against Widmore?
I keep wondering about Locke. The Others embraced him as their leader just as Ben said, but what went wrong? Did he screw up as he often does? Did he anger the Island and get booted off somwhow? Once back in the real world, did he lose his use of his legs again? Why did he visit Walt, Hurley, Jack, etc. What was said during those meetings? And of course, is he really dead or will the Island resurrect him eventually? But if he was sucessful in offing himself, the Island must have released its hold on him to do it, no? And what was with that alias?
I was devastated knowing Jin blew up with the freighter. Poor Sun. But it looks like she's out for revenge. That will be an interesting subplot for next season.
And the Penny and Desmond reunion...awesome! I just hope we haven't seen the last of Des.
And finally....moving the Island using a big wheel? It gave the image of a ship's steering wheel. For a moment I thought Ben was going to "drive" it away.
The whole series has been flip flopping between past and future, but the time line has been shrinking. I think next season the two will meet up at last and things will be happening (for the most part) in the present. I'm not sure I can wait until February...

Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 4:48 AMSawyer most likely told Kate about his daughter (Clementine) and Cassidy....hince all the drama with Jack over who she was calling and where she had been.
If they all have to be back together to get to the island (which I predicted than you! (-:) I'm thinking that means not only the Oceanic 6 and Dead Locke...haha deadlock...mmmmmdeadlock....but also Des and Frank. That is probably the real reason that Ben wants to kill Penny....so that Des will go back to the island. I bet he tries to get Sayid to do it and, but he wouldn't/couldn't go through with it. I bet that's why Sayid went to get Hurley....maybe Sayid has Penn and Des in a "safe place" so that Ben can't get to them as well. ooooooh! Maybe Sayid is now working for Abandonnamoma (or however you say it)...and is collecting Losties for them while Ben is trying to collect Losties as well. who ever has the full collection will be able to get to the island!!!! Now it is just left to who will steal Aaron to get Kate aboard...Jack for Ben or Sayid for Big A. AND to go even further in my idea explosion....Maybe Big A had Sayid kill Locke! Good things to obsess over this summer! -

Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 6:46 AMFirst of all BEST EPISODE EVER!! Interesting theories you got there "Supreme" ... as for someone stealing Kate, don't forget ythat after she met Jack at the airport and had that dream with Claire in it, Kate stood over Aaron's bed and said "I'm so sorry", I don't know about all of you, but I got the impression that she was admitting out-loud to herself and Aaron that she was going to try and get back there (the island) and that she was so sorry to leave him (Aaron) behind. Heck, even Claire said DON'T bring him back to the island. I think Aaron was meant to get off the island.
I need to go back and watch Season 1 but what did that fortune teller tell Claire about her baby?!?!! I wish I could remember!
I loved how this episode started at last year's finale and ended in the same place ... SO FULL CIRCLE!
Meanwhile, let's talk cliffhangers:
- where is the island now?
- who of the Losties is still on the island besides Locke and Sawyer? What about Rose and Bernard?
- what about Fariday and the rest of the folks in the raft?!!?
- what will Walt's roll be in all this now?
- what ever happened to Vincent?
- Bad things happened after Jack left the island .. I wonder if at some point the island had to be moved AGAIN and Locke was then forced to the leave the island like Ben.
- Did Locke KILL HIMSELF when he got back because he could no longer walk?
- and what was all this about Charlotte wanting to find out where she was born? Was she born on the island? Why did she and Mile chose to stay? was that there plan all along?
- And Daniel .. what's his role in all this?!!? That little book of his sure does have a lot of info on the island.
thoughts?
Yup, BEST SHOW EVER. -
-
Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 3:50 PMThe fortune teller told Claire that she couldn't let someone else raise her baby. That being the case, Aaron might be destined to return to the island since Claire is still there (presumably). Also, when Kate was apologizing to Aaron, I interpreted it as an apology for having to take him back, not an apology for leaving him behind. -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Tue, June 3, 2008 - 7:52 PM>>Also, when Kate was apologizing to Aaron, I interpreted it as an apology for having to take him back, not an apology for leaving him behind.<<
Hmmm, and I took it to be an apology for inadvertantly "stealing" him from his real mother.
They way she is with him; Mama-Bear with big teeth, I don't think she'd leave him. Especially because she has absolutely no one in her life that she trusts.
Did Kate here the conversation between Jack and Claires Mom at the funeral? -
-
Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 11:35 PMIt didn't seem like Kate heard the conversation between Jack and Claire's mom.
My interpretation of the apology, until further information is provided, was that it was for the whole fucked up situation, that he lost his mom and that his life is going to be so weird.
-
Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 6:07 PMSurely Jack must shared the info from that conversation with Kate?
Then again the one thing we know about Lost is that none of them seem to talk to each other.

Re: "No Place Like Home" Season 4 Finale Discussion 05/29/2008
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 7:09 PMI was also wondering about Des and Frank. There is no way Desmond would agree to return to the island, so they are going to have to do something pretty horrible to convince him. I can't imagine Penny makes it through to the last moment of Season 6.
But I am holding a candle that Jin did the sensible thing and jumped off the freighter before it 'sploded. Picked up by Daniel and the red-shirts? But then what? They are totally adrift, yikes. Good thing red-shirts are so yummy.
We are going to have to be given some redeemed lost love in the end, so if Pen dies, maybe they'll give us Jin, Sun and Ji Yeon reunited as a consolation prize. I hope they don't think a Kate/Sawyer reunion is going to cut it, cause it ain't. Though I am glad he isn't dead. And SOOOOOOOO glad that Desmond made it! Here's to the survival of flawless hotness!! As if this show isn't awesome enough, all the man candy is like icing on the cake.
