I don't typically delete entire threads (or even portions of threads) as I don't believe in "over-moderation" and try to leave this tribe as open to fluid discussion as possible, BUT, that thread started with the biggest punchline/spoiler of the whole season and was simply labeled "WOW." I'm sure more than one person had the misfortune of opening it prematurely and finding out something he/she didn't wanna know yet just because of a poorly labeled topic.
No, technically the info is not a spoiler cause the episode has already aired, HOWEVER, if you've not seen the episode yet and read such a thread, you will be spoiled. Make sense? Just choose good subject lines, that's all, really.
So, after the initial spoiling nature of that thread, there were a whole lotta people insulting each other's netiquette, and whatever. I looked though the thread for anything substantial and worth salvaging, and just didn't see it. So, it's gone. If you didn't see it, then what you missed was the reveal from the last 2 seconds of the finale, and then a bunch of people in this tribe insulting each other and/or criticizing each other's posting styles.
Sorry, if you are offended by the deletion. The reasons to delete outweighed the reasons to keep.
In the meantime, I am going to re-post my thoughts on choosing subjects/titles of threads:
--------
However, I DO think that's why it's good that we are now labeling the episode specific threads with titles that have the ep name and date so people can easily search those threads out AND why it's also a good reason for people to carefully consider thread titles. For example: naming a thread "Hurley's Comic Book" would give people a good idea what to expect in that thread, and they would know whether they were interested in reading it before they even opened it. "Mirror Moon Matter Theory of LOST" is also a good thread title.
Some really POOR titles are, "OMG!" "WTF!" "Tonight's Episode" "Was it just me?" and "They're all dead???" The first 4 are terrible thread titles because they give the readers/posters no clue whatsoever WHAT to expect when they read. The last thread title is a spoiler title, and no one wants to be spoiled before they even open a thread.
Give thought to thread titles before starting a new thread. That's really the best advice I can give as far as posting goes. Think well and thou shalt be well thunk upon. :)

Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 6:23 PMPS. For what it's worth, I copied the whole "WOW" thread and put it away for safe keeping, just in case the majority of people here are completely outraged and want me to put it back up (with a new and improved title of course.)

Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 10:15 PMMaybe it's censorship that you agree with or find helpful or harmless, or well-intentioned... but it seems to fit the definition quite fine....
I'm just saying. -

Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 10:26 PMI think "tonight's episode" is an okay title. If you don't know what the episode was called and you want to talk about it and not spoil for others - just wondering what is wrong with that?? -
-
Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 11:24 PMThat sounds okay to me - maybe add the date? That would fit Ivy's overall goal, I think.
I've been in this tribe for years and we never had that rule at all, though... Once a new episode aired you pretty much knew that there would be a flurry of new posts and threads. Being of sound mind, I never visited and started reading after a new episode aired if I had not seen it yet.
Weird that we should feel obliged to treat aired episode content as "spoilers". -

Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 4:45 AMI agree with Ivy's point in appropriately titling a thread, but I also agree that if an episode has aired in all time zones, any content discussed can no longer be considered a spoiler.

Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 9:20 AMYes, that is clear.
The willingness to coddle and work around idiots by using special labels well .....it's a concern i don't share. -
-
Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 9:23 AMI care about idiots, though. Heck, sometimes I do idiotic stuff, myself. Would I have learned how to use my brain if the world enabled my stupid-side all the time?
The following is an example of how people learn to not be an idiot:s:
You make a mistake like "whoops, i read a thread after a new episode aired and I ruined the episode for myself!" - and then learn from the mistake.

Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 9:38 AMIsn't name calling and insults part of the reason the last thread got deleted?
Personally I agree that if a thread is marked "Wow" and it is the evening of the show, then one should make it their own personal responsibility to avoid that thread. Still the Mod has given us the rules plenty of times now and we know how to title threads by this time.
Why name calling and insults have to come into it at all is a mystery to me. -
-
Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 9:53 AMI don't think it's a big deal to use the word "idiot", sorry if that offended you.
I am offended, to tell the truth, with these rules about labeling, and the convention of having Master Threads like "Episode # 5/Titie/Date"... as the Main Thread for a new episode...
I've been in this tribe for years and whenever a new episode aired there were tons of new threads and much more discussion because we would have a separate thread for each subject that the episode brought up...
Not tons of people trying to talk about tons on things in one thread, as is the basic pattern here. Thank the Lord for people who do create threads to branch off the conversation! I wish that happened more.

Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 10:00 AM"Still the Mod has given us the rules plenty of times "
I guess it's this that bugs me - I don't agree with her rules. As much as I dig her as a moderator and a person I simply think these rules are unnecessary and especially the convention of an episode having a Master Thread is very confusing and limiting to our conversations.
-
Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 10:48 AMYes, words are often no big deal when they are directed at someone else.
The Mod is the mod. She makes the rules and they have been this way for long enough now. Some could speculate that it is idiotic to still be whining about it.
ANYWAY.....let's talk about that show Lost. That is why we are all here right? -
-
Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 10:55 AMspoilers suck. i don't even like the "next week on lost", so good work kid!
-
Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 12:08 PMI wasn't directing that word at anyone, I even said I can be idiotic too... re-read?
Also, for someone concerned with being polite here, this surprises me: "whining?" That's not the most diplomatic word choice either, Yuni.
I think everyone should say how they feel about any rules, and a moderator should not enforce rules if there is enough distaste for them. I have no idea what percentage of us feel pro or con these rules, but I know that if people say nothing about their preference when the matter comes up, Ivy will have no idea how people feel.
Anyway, I am happy to discuss LOST, I am even happy to obey these rules as I have been. I would prefer to not be censored or criticized for having my own preference on our rules, its not democratic or neighborly. -
-
Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 1:32 PMHave I expressed any concern about being polite? Nope. I have expressed that name calling was what contributed to the last thread being deleted.
You are one of the first ones to get upset if words like idiotic and "coddle idiots" are aimed towards you. Those of us who have been here long enough certainly know this. You don't get to be both hyper sensitive and insensitive so why don't you just chose which one you want to be and stick to it?
We have heard your concerns multiple times over multiple months, in multiple threads. We get it you don't like the way things are moded. You know how we get it? Because you have said it again and again in multiple threads? Should I repeat that? Should I keep saying that in multiple threads for the next few months? Would that help you to get how much I get that you don't like the mod rules?
Geesh! -

Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 2:48 PMMan, can't we have a simple discussion about censorship without it turning all name cally and political! (-: haha!
I don't think Joanna hates the moderator or the job she is doing. Our mod is doing a good job. It seems that neither Joanna nor myself like how ruley it is here some times. It is a bit annoying. BUT deleting people's thoughts and ideas is a little Big Brotherish. I really don't think that should have been done.
Joanna doesn't mention it in every thread...but it would be funny if she went back to every thread and put something in each one now. Joanna, I will give you a dollar if you do it!!! (-: tehe!
I like things messy and spazzy myself. Keeps my attention better.
I think we are all a little grumpy from impending Lost withdrawl. -

Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 4:00 PMWell, I'm excited to see how popular this thread has become. ;)
I expected some backlash. I'd be a fool to not have. But, that said, I haven't seen one single person say that they would like the deleted thread reinstated. Did you notice that above? Where I said I had copied and stowed the thread in case the majority of people felt it was wrongly pulled?
Before pulling it, I weighed the good and bad of the thread. Its title was non-indicative of its content, and its content contained the SINGLE BIGGEST SPOILER of the season....the one question we've been waiting a full year to have answered. Yep, the writers felt the question was interesting enough and suspenseful enough that they carried us from one season's finale to the next before giving us an answer, so to me, it struck me as fairly anti-climatic to have that question answered in a thread simply entitled "WOW" not more than 12 hrs after the finale aired.
But that alone was not enough to make me pull the thread. I looked at the replies, and there were several people who were upset, disappointed, and angry to have been spoiled and said things along the lines of "What? Don't we have rules about posting spoilers???" Then there was the name calling and the insults and the finger pointing.
And what else was there? Not much.
So when all was said and done, pulling it seemed more favorable than not. I realize that this was heavy handed and probably did not and DOES NOT represent the interests of the entire tribe, but it seemed to be the better of the 2 options (pulling it or not.)
****
THAT SAID, I'd be more than happy to open up a new discussion around how people would like this tribe to be moderated with respect to SPOILERS as we move into season 5. We have over 7 months to discuss this, so maybe we can come up with something that our tribe at large will feel good about.
****
Joanna, thanks for the PM. Oddly, enough, I didn't take any of this personally. I was watching with interest as it unfolded, but no personal offense was taken.

Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 5:44 PMPersonally I never wanted a new mod for this tribe. Not that I have any issues with the current Mod. I think she does a fine job and no matter what she does there will always be someone who complains about something. I just never wanted a new mod because I sort of liked the old Mod in that he was never here and he was faceless and enigmatic. In a way it sort of felt like our own version of the show. They have Jacob and we had our faceless silent guy who may or may not have been watching over us. We just had to figure things out for ourselves and learn how to work out our stuff ourselves. Of course that was my own little fantasy and I can appreciate that not everyone dug it.
I especially remember someone saying they wanted a mod who would control how nasty people got with one another. Irony if funny. Ivy stepped up and I support the job she has done. There is no way to please everyone and really it is just a tribe about a TV show so in the words of Mr. King (Rodney, not Martin) "can't we all just get along?" -

Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 5:50 PMThis is an addendum to what I said just above Yuni's post, and more in response to Joanna:
Regarding the Episode Discussion threads: These are not intended to be a "catch all" for each episode. These are created so that people can discuss surprising and revealing elements of the show in a thread that is clearly identified so that people won't *accidentally* read "spoilers" or reveals. I fully support the creation of (and I have said this before) threads that are tangential to the episodes and expanding on questions raised by episodes and/or the greater story arc of the show. Keep the topics coming. The only thing I am asking is that people come up with subject lines that are indicative of what the thread contains. And I will say it again: "OMG!" "WTF?" "WOW!", etc. are terrible titles. Even if there is nothing spoilerish contained in such a thread, the threads are NOT going to catch the interest of someone looking for a specific topic, the threads WILL sink fast, and if something of interest IS said within such a thread, no one will ever be able to find it again. Good titles make for good discussions. -
-
Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 6:25 PMI agree 100% with our mod! If I want to see subject lines with only WOW or WTF, I'll hang out on the Myspace forums for that shit.
If it sounds like I'm being condesending or insulting, then so be it. One of the reasons why I prefer Tribe discussion boards over others, is that there's a certain amount of decorum and maturity here (to a certain degree of course).
(Thank you for modding it...Miss Moderator)

Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 8:19 PMIvy I think you're doing an awesome job as Mod and I personally like the way you title threads for current episodes (date, episode title). I often rewatch episodes weeks, months, years after they've aired and your subject lines make it SO easy to find the discussions of each episode. Huge improvement over the threads before you were mod.
I don't have a problem with many thread topics about one episode or one story arch but I really like having a central thread for each episode. So, thanks.
And I hate spoilers! And I'm in the last time zone that it airs, and I don't always watch it the night that it airs. I try to avoid this tribe while the rest of the country is watching, but sometimes is 4pm, I'm in my last hour or two of work, I'm goofing off on tribe I am an idiot sometimes, I stumble in here forgeting what time it is on the E.Coast and bam! I've been spolied!
Is it really so hard to add the word "spoiler" to your subject line? For us occasional idiots?

Well I certainly didn't intend to do anything of the sort, but I see I have really annoyed you. I'm surprised. You usually blow everything off.
Hm. I don't agree with everything you say here, and I think you are being selective and incorrect in your summaries of me... however, your take on me is interesting information to have. I'll think about it! ( If you want my opinion on you, just ask. )

Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Sun, June 1, 2008 - 1:43 PMI must say that I am not a "super" active participant on most of these threads, but I've been apart of this tribe for a couple of years and there have been few issues that have come up, mainly the naming of threads and respect for those posting. Poor titles and personal insults have no place here b/c we all have a focus when opening this tribe, and that is to expand our knowledge and love of Lost with others. Anything that doesn't not enhance that experience (poor titles, taunting replies) should be looked at as dulling the experience here. Now if we can all just follow the form provided by the mod we can easily navigate through all the threads that are posted. Nothing more, nothing less....but there will always be somebody who screws it up, and we are back to square one again.....I hope it doesn't happen, but stranger things have happened. -

LOL!!
Hey, you did what you had to do as the Moderator of the Tribe and I totally understand your move :) -

Re: "WOW" Thread Deleted
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 8:59 AMI've been a "silent reader" of this tribe for years, mostly because I spend too much time commenting on other websites, I'm tired of my own voice.
The moderator's job is kind of like the adult on the playground who keeps the bullies from pounding on the little guys with glasses. I think when a thread reaches the point where the majority of the posts center around people trying to hurt each other, then recess is over. I would have also deleted the entire thread.
Those who don't like it can start their own tribe.
