LOST Tribe get-together at Black Rock

Hi All-

Who amongst the 500 of us are Burners and how many amongst the LOST Tribe Burners will be at Black Rock City on the playa of Nevada's surreal Black Rock Desert for this year's Burn?

Does anyone want to get together for LOST Tribe conversation and refreshments in the desert? I'd enjoy meeting some of the other LOST Tribe folks in person. We can either keep this rendezvous private and within our tribe by only discussing here within the list a time, date, and place for getting together, or we could put a general invitation into the What-Where-When schedule book (the one each person receives a copy of from the greeters at the gate) calling all LOST-loving Burners at large to join us at a specific time/date/place, ...or both!

In years past I've seen plenty of DHARMA Initiative logos and suchlike wandering around out there on the playa. Is anyone here part of an actual LOST-themed camp? I've assumed from the first moment the Black Rock came up in LOST that the writers have some Burning Man connection. How fun it would be --like extra icing on the already yummy cake-- if we (or other folks who are doing an actual LOST-themed event at Burning Man this year) were to set a time, date, and place for a LOST Tribe get-together and then it happens some of the LOST writers, crew, or actors also show up, too!

I am all for the meeting other LOST folks. Lets plan a nice shindig and if we can get it together in time to get it into the where-what-when then I say lets go for it! I vote for Wednesday or Thursday late afternoon.

I'm still on the fence about going this year.....although I'm inclined to. It'd be fun to get together and discuss Lost on the playa. :)

        Outstanding!

Shall we do a cattle-call to the herd at large (please do recall there will probably be in excess of 40,000 of the planet's best and brightest, plus some frat boys, at the Burn this year), or keep it private and within the Tribe, ...or set two different time/dates and do both?

[Admission of bias: I favor unconditional inclusivity, even if it can be a pain in the butt at times ...and I have had way too much fun in years past with those aforementioned well-muscled young straight frat boys. They are so easy to turn to the dark side!]

The intensely surreal moments at Burning Man, such as tiger-striped F-16s buzzing the camp, or heartfelt drumming at sunrise with Others, or art beyond any mere Four-Toed Foot you've ever seen, remind me of glimpses of LOST's island community.

Hey Steven, you, personally, are welcome to promote it to "the herd at large" which I assume to be The Burning Man Tribe, however, I would ask that you NOT start directing traffic from The BM Tribe to this tribe as I do not want this tribe to become a general discussion board for BM events.

So, what I would suggest is that if you do feel compelled to invite the greater Tribe/BM community at large, that you create a new tribe for such a thing, OR just post an announcement in The BM Tribe about the meet-up pretty close to the date of the actual event.

          Thanks.

            Hi Ivy-

Actually all I meant by the LOST Tribe Burners doing a shout-out to the herd at large, if we did so, would for those of us who are members of this tribe and headed to the playa in August to place an invitation note in the actual hard-copy event schedule, a note saying something like "LOST fans- please come enjoy pleasant conversation and refreshments together at [address] on [time/date]. It will be fun!" There is a booklet containing an event schedule which each person receives as s/he enters Black Rock City -its only in there I had thought to place a note, if we did so, not over in the Burning Man tribe's discussion forum or anywhere else like that.

This is basically the same notion as that which others in our LOST tribe (some among those fortunate enough to live in fairly close proximity to one another in the SF Bay Area or in greater El Lay) have quite pleasantly and appropriately suggested with regard to getting together for sushi and LOST conversation &/or watching a episode of LOST. Sounds like all sorts 'o yummy LOST fun! This version is just out in the Nevada desert and probably with a bit of playa dust in the sushi (if the wind is blowing hard then the stuff gets absolutely everywhere and into everything).

Yep, I'd not want barbarian hordes from other interest groups piling in here to start up all sorts of off-topic threads, either, though I'd be surprised if folks actually wanted to do so. LOST über alles within the LOST tribe! I'm with you all the way on that. Thanks for your moderate moderation in moderating -you are a model moderator in this regard!

[Just to make sure everyone gets the right music together with the text lyrics there as I intend them with my comment, this tune is "hugs, smiles, and genuinely friendly appreciation" not "snide, bitchy, sarcastic waspyness" Have you ever noticed how in e-mail the same statement can be read either as totally mean & nasty or as completely sweet & pleasant depending on the music behind it ...but because the sound is off one must guess which flavor it actually is? The intent and tune here is entirely appreciative and positive.]

So you're saying we have a choice to make:

              1) Invite LOST fans on the playa regardless of if they know of Tribe or not.

              2) Have it be Just Us.

I vote for #2. This could be a very small gathering, but we have established ties, we share this community, and it makes sense to want to meet Alone, a generic LOST gathering doesn't seem quite exotic enough for a playa activity ... for me, TV is too normal to be celebrated in the same place where the Canadian Beaver Eating Contest is going on down the way... Either way, I will try to come

Looks like a purely LOST tribe get-together is generally favored, without posting a general notice in the WWW schedule handed out at the gate. Sounds good! I'd prefer this low key and entirely within-the-LOST-tribe approach, as there always seems to be a certain rather comically high level of drama associated with planning and pulling together any sort of majorly huge event on the playa (e.g., www.youtube.com/watch ). Myself, I'd be perfectly happy even if it turns out only five LOST tribe folks show up at our potentially small Black Rock LOST Tribe soirée, since this gives those of us who do manage to appear a chance to chat in person ...and, of course, to compare our most recent LOST theories!

Probably there will be some big LOST camp(s) and/or scheduled LOST-themed or focused event(s) out there on the playa completely independently of our LOST tribe crew; if any of the LOST writers, cast, and crew are going to show up and mingle with the common folk then we'll probably see them in those venues and events if we go and check 'em out.

Melanie suggested a possible window for our LOST tribe Black Rock get-together (thanks!). As the Burns draws closer perhaps the logistics will become clearer (I know all this will be much clearer for me once my bunch hears back from the BMorg on approval and site coordinates for the camp I am assisting to plan). Once everyone's logistics and Black Rock camp addresses become better known it may turn out that in addition to holding one pleasant LOST tribe playa meet-up date, some of us may also enjoy extending standing invites to other LOST tribe folks for coming by whenever they are in the neighborhood and can make it for a potluck-at-sundown, late-night libations in dusty sofas gathered around the warm fire, sunrise bike rides, or whatever else at specific camp addresses.

dood, gate takes tickets, takes beer, and searches cars for more free stuff for us to have fun with. greeters hand out stupid booklets, crap, and greasy hugs. don't get them confused, or risk spending the night in "D" lot.

  • Calling all LOST Tribe Burners: come get yerself found on the playa at The Lost Penguin!

LOST Tribe get-togethers on the playa:
    26AUG, Tuesday, 5:30-6:30pm
    28AUG, Thursday, 5:30-6:30pm
...come to one soirée, both, or please do propose additional times &/or places for more LOST Tribe get-togethers as well!

The Lost Penguin, planned to be located at 4:00 on the Esplanade, is described by the cool folks who run it as being "a very chill and friendly space if you wanna meet friends there or meet new friends. Feel free to converge on the place whenever" ...and our crew has been officially welcomed to gather there. Dusty sofas, iced libations, and LOST conversation await under the pleasant shade as the colorful Black Rock City populace passes by on the Esplanade and the Man waves to us from across the deep playa.

I'm planning to be at both of the Lost Penguin get-togethers mentioned above and will have Burning Man 2008 postcards for you as gifts if you want 'em for sending to folks off-playa or for your scrapbook. I'm camped immediately behind the Black Rock City Post Office (www.blackrockcitypostoffice.org) alongside Center Camp so am easy to find if you miss the Lost Penguin rendezvous and want to say hi.

Looking forward to meeting LOST Tribesters in person and enjoying conversation with you all!
