i don't get to watch the latest episode until a couple of days after air date, so i stay away from the boards until after i've watched the show. starting w/the Apr 24 ep, i was not able to watch for over a week. i watched the # of unread posts rise and rise and rise....
finally i clicked on the lost tribe just to kick it back down the list, only to see an ungodly number of new posts reappear.
is anyone else feeling overwhelmed by the # of posts?
i'm in a music discussion group on yahoo that got so-o-o-o-o busy, that i just set my options to 'no mail, web only' and ignored it for a year or more. i go back and it seems many others had the same idea b/c the # of posts/month had dropped dramatically.
some of the posting guidelines in other groups (or tribes as well, ftm) include: no 'me, too' posts; no inflammatory posts....
uh, ok, brain phart here.
hey bundt! do you remember those guidelines from the Incidentalist?

Re: too many posts?
Sun, May 11, 2008 - 11:37 AMI once missed a couple of weeks here and there were over 500 posts!
I check the headers that look interesting and skip the rest. Some times I go back when I have time. I don't feel obligated to read everything. I try to as people come up with cool ideas that make me think.
I like the fact that more than just a few people post. I love the fact that almost everyone in this tribe gets a bit giddy after an episode and has a place to go to say whatever they are feeling....even if it is an "Oh my god! did you see what Ben was wearing!" (-: I for one appreciate small posts as my mind is generally reeling from all the info I just watched and can't take much more in...but I am also in another group that has been described as a bunch of magpies! (-:
So, to answer your question, yes I do get ovewhelmed sometimes, but I think it is awesome that there are bigger Lost freaks out there than me! (-: -

Re: too many posts?
Sun, May 11, 2008 - 12:03 PMSorry, you're feeling overwhelmed, but I do think everyone here is contributing is a positive and fun way, so I don't see "too many posts" as a reason to set stringent guidelines. We don't have much that is inflammatory around here, and we DO have much that is supportive and thought provoking, so I think we're in pretty good shape.
I'll admit I try to log in at least once a day to "keep up" with the groove of conversation. But if that's not possible, I choose my reading carefully.
However, I DO think that's why it's good that we are now labeling the episode specific threads with titles that have the ep name and date so people can easily search those threads out AND why it's also a good reason for people to carefully consider thread titles. For example: naming a thread "Hurley's Comic Book" would give people a good idea what to expect in that thread, and they would know whether they were interested in reading it before they even opened it. "Mirror Moon Matter Theory of LOST" is also a good thread title.
Some really POOR titles are, "OMG!" "WTF!" "Tonight's Episode" "Was it just me?" and "They're all dead???" The first 4 are terrible thread titles because they give the readers/posters no clue whatsoever WHAT to expect when they read. The last thread title is a spoiler title, and no one wants to be spoiled before they even open a thread.
Give thought to thread titles before starting a new thread. That's really the best advice I can give as far as posting goes. Think well and thou shalt be well thunk upon. :) -

I TOTALLY agree with that!! Thank you!
I personally LOVE it that this tribe is so busy. I have only one friend in RL that I can "talk lost" with. What would I do without all of the fanatics on this tribe!!??

Other than the "me too" ban, not really. The Incidentalist is so long ago now for me. I think Ivy is correct that we don't get much inflammatory around here, and I'd say a "me too" ban is irrelevant around here.
To answer your other question, I tend to read everything every day at work, and I keep up during the day. I have to catch up on Monday since I don't read Tribe much from home. But keeping up regularly means I never see too many posts at once. Except on Fridays.
Also, I make it a point to see the current episode the day it airs, so no one spoils it for me. -

Re: too many posts?
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 6:59 PMI think we need a critical mass of posts.... With lots of posts come the great posts where someone makes a strong point, or goes on a funny tangent, or gets into a back-and-forth that's fun or illuminating to read.
Also, I am an advocate of skimming. I hereby encourage you to skim and even skip!

Re: too many posts?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 4:11 AMI don't think there are too many posts...there are a good amount of people involved in this Tribe: all with their opinions, ideas and LOST philosophies. This is not only a discussion board, but a sounding board. As we all know, LOST can be quite confusing and frustrating at times. It's great that we have a place to meet up and share our thoughts and confusions.
Sorry about poorly constructed titles...I think I may have guilty of such a thing once or twice myself. :O( -

Re: too many posts?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 5:32 PMHey Steph :)
A well constructed thread title will also keep the thread alive longer. If you have an idea that's intriguing enough to warrant starting a new thread, doesn't it deserve a good title? People will be excited to see threads they know are about the same stuff they've been thinking about. If people have no idea what a thread is about, they are much more likely to skip right over it, and the thread will sink fast.
Anyway, I think this makes sense to everyone, so let's just hope this season continues to be as high energy and thought provoking as it's been so far so we all have lots to think, post and talk about!
:)
