LOST Survey #4-8-15-16-23-42, version 1.0

topic posted Sun, March 23, 2008 - 1:51 PM by

Welcome to LOST tribe survey #4-8-15-16-23-42 version 1.0, prepared by members of the DHARMA Initiative at the behest of Alvar Hanso and the DeGroots. If you are reading this survey then you already know and have worked with Gerald and Karen DeGroot, founders and masterminds of the DHARMA Initiative. By now, you also know there are many research goals for our joint venture. What you may not know is why we have assembled the DHARMA Initiative and the 493 greatest minds in the world into this LOST tribe of which you are a member. While there are 493 members of this LOST tribe at the moment, until now most of them have remained hidden and are either largely or completely unknown to each other. The time has come --via answers the 493 of you provide to this survey-- for more to become revealed. Please answer any or all of these LOST tribe survey questions in as much or as little explanatory detail as you feel comfortable providing. As with all you've already been told, you are bound by your honor and commitment to keep secret that which you are about learn. Why all the security, all the secrecy? The answer is simple: your research is intended to do nothing less than save the world as we know it.

Namasté.

    Mon, March 24, 2008 - 12:45 PM
    1) LOST character(s) I most appreciate and/or admire:
Jacob (for sheer mysteriousness), Eko (for his exercise of free will to make hard choices and sacrifice himself to protect those he loves, and to seek redemption despite his limitations and flaws), and Locke (for his exercise of free will to completely surrender and give himself over in faith and service to a higher purpose). I also really like Rousseau just because she is majorly cool, a person I'd enjoy having as a friend.

    2) LOST character(s) I most adore and/or lust after:
Boone, by several light years (he is the sexiest martyred Christ figure I have ever seen, by far) followed by Clockwork-Oranged' Karl. Yes, I admit it: I am shallow and liquify in the face of both Boone-like elven beauty and robust Karl-like masculine youth.

    3) LOST character(s) I most despise, loath, find repulsive, and/or shudder at the thought of:
Ah, but there are so many to choose from. Probably the nameless and mostly faceless bunch which mill about like cattle on the beach or follow Ben like sheep, followed by Michael and Mr. Tom "of Finland" Friendly.

    4) LOST character(s) I most identify with in the sense that if I opened my eyes and magically found myself incarnated in a body or bodies in LOST-land, then this would most likely be in whom I would manifest:
Jacob, if he is who I think he is; that sort of technological-will-to-power and hubris has a familiar taste to it. Otherwise, Jack (the quasi-rational scientist).

    5) Most intriguing conundrum or paradox(es) to date:
How I would just love to trap Smokey on the slab in my lab! Oh, the fun we would have! (Imagine me snapping my rubber glove as I sing that, Dr. Frankenfurter-like, with a grin). I want to know Smokey better, right down to his/her/its teensy little sub-atomic particles. Oh, yes. Also, seeing how the polar bear ended up in the desert archaeological dig with a DHARMA Inititive collar on its ancient skeleton is going to be fascinating.

    6) Most disappointing or stupid shortcoming or error to date:
Those stupid potted plants barely buried in the sand in so many of the beach scenes. It really breaks my suspension of disbelief when I see species of plants which could NOT POSSIBLY be growing where they are supposedly growing, sticking up from the salty sand of a wind-buffeted beach, with not a tattered leaf to be seen on the lot of them. Please. This is like having a trash-can-lid flying saucer suspended from a string tied to the tip of a fishing pole, bobbing into the frame of a 1950's Ed Wood scifi film.

    7) LOST has/has not provoked me to study and think about human nature, philosophy, and/or metaphysics in ways I never have before:
Yes, it has. I am developing an interest the classical philosophers which has not been particularly present before, and discovering I had combined figures in my mind out of ignorance (such as Rousseau the painter and Rousseau the philosopher- I thought they were one and the same person).

    8) Most/least favorite LOST symbolism and/or symbols:
The light and dark doves and the comic book images really have me going, plus the yin/yang in the DHARMA Initiative symbol.

    9) Most/least favorite scene(s):
Favorites- any scene with Boone in it. Least favorite: people being shot and being brutal to each other; such waste and barbarism.

    10) Most/least favorite dialogue quotes:
"He who breaks a thing to find out what it is, has left the path of wisdom." -Gandalf. Oh, from LOST! In that case, probably Sawyer's nick-names. Some of them are really great.

    11) "As a result of LOST my travel plans with regard to vacationing in Hawaii have been influenced in the following manner:"
__X__Definitely going to Hawaii (in fact, have already been to the Big Island a couple times and greatly enjoyed it. Will return again).
    ____Probably going to Hawaii
    ____Maybe going to Hawaii
    ____Not likely going to Hawaii
    ____Never going to Hawaii

    12) Favorite wild guesses and/or elaborate theories of WTHIRGO (What The Hell Is Really Going On):
I am still composing my own grand unified theory (based largely on the comic book clues and light/dark twinned pairs) and have not read any others.

    13) I hope to see this happen on LOST:
Boone and Karl playing naked in the surf, then splashing coconut milk all over each other and licking it off.

    14) I fear to see this happen on LOST:
The actual explanation for all the weird metaphysics turning out to be much less fascinating than whatever I have dreamed up --and/or-- Ben turning out to also be Jacob (and possibly even Aaron -although how that second switcheroo would have taken place would require a stretch of credulity even for an omnipotent time-and-space dimension-phasing force).

    15) As of this exact moment I have/have not already watched the Sri Lanka video [a hot-link to which is provided in the LOST tribe header]:
Yes, I have, and highly recommend the experience. Very interesting.

    16) The as-yet unasked question(s) I'd most like to see all 493 members of the LOST tribe provide their answer(s) to is/are....
Who are you 450-plus lurkers out there who never post any comments? Please do give us some clues to reveal yourselves, LOST-fashion.

    1) LOST character(s) I most appreciate and/or admire:

Desmond, for having overcome serious obstacles both internal and external and found the courage and grit to do what he has to to find his True Love™. Kick ass, brotha! (Honorable mention to Rousseau for reasonably similar reasons.)

    2) LOST character(s) I most adore and/or lust after:

Adore: Hurley and Sayid...one for being sweet and cuddly, the other for being able to stay a romantic despite all he's been through and done
Lust: Sun and Charlotte...so hard to pick.

    3) LOST character(s) I most despise, loath, find repulsive, and/or shudder at the thought of:

Charles Widmore...he's EEEEEVIL. You never see him doing anything but either fucking with poor Des & Pen or trying to take over the worl...er, Island. (Then the world!) Ben's too much of a "love to hate" deal for me to put him here.
Also, special mention to Jack & Kate (for reasons, see the "Kate-Haters" thread...)

    4) LOST character(s) I most identify with in the sense that if I opened my eyes and magically found myself incarnated in a body or bodies in LOST-land, then this would most likely be in whom I would manifest:

Daniel Faraday...the absent-minded, well-intentioned (as far as we know) geek.

    5) Most intriguing conundrum or paradox(es) to date:

"Guys...where *are* we?" The nature of the Island, of course! That's the lynch-pin mystery. All other mysteries on the Island (the 4-toed statue, the Black Rock, DHARMA, the Others, the Monster, the time-warp-cloak) flow from that one.

    6) Most disappointing or stupid shortcoming or error to date:

The casting of Matthew Fox and Evangeline Lilly. *shudder* They eclipse Nikki & Paulo because they simply don't have the common decency to die horribly the way N&P did after a mere half-season. Honorable mention for the failure to secure Nestor Carbonell for the start of S.4. Thank the gods Cane got canceled!

    7) LOST has/has not provoked me to study and think about human nature, philosophy, and/or metaphysics in ways I never have before:

Newp. It just dovetails nicely with my tendency to do that already...though it did suggest some authors and works I might not have gotten to otherwise (or at least as fast as I did upon seeing them on Lost).

    8) Most/least favorite LOST symbolism and/or symbols:

Most: The Virgin Mary statues containing the heroin...talk about "the opiate of the masses"! ;-) (Honorable mention to the numbered bunnies for their ironically fertile symbolism on the Island of the Dead Mothers™.)
    Least:

    9) Most/least favorite scene(s):

Most: Des & Pen's shared "I love you" over the phone in The Constant (followed by: the Purple Sky/Arctic Listening Station scene in Live Together, Die Alone; beardy-Jack's plaintive "We have to go BACK!" in Through the Looking Glass; Rose & Bernard's reunion in Collision; Sawyer's killing of Anthony Cooper in The Brig...so many to choose from!)
Least: Matt Fox and Bai Ling. 'Nuff said.

    10) Most/least favorite dialogue quotes:

Most: "If you say live together die alone to me Jack, I'm gonna punch you in your face." -Rose
Least: "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALT!" (Except when used to poke fun at Michael on Internet forums...)

    11) "As a result of LOST my travel plans with regard to vacationing in Hawaii have been influenced in the following manner:
    ____Definitely going to Hawaii
    ____Probably going to Hawaii
__√__Maybe going to Hawaii (I'd like to manage to attend at least one of the remaining two "Sunset at the Beach" season premieres!)
    ____Not likely going to Hawaii
    ____Never going to Hawaii

    12) Favorite wild guesses and/or elaborate theories of WTHIRGO (What The Hell Is Really Going On):

Gotta say I'm very much in favor of the Lost HEMA Theory. (Link: losthematheory.com/default.aspx )

    13) I hope to see this happen on LOST:

Desmond & Penny's in-the-flesh reunion and "happily ever after".

    14) I fear to see this happen on LOST:

Any more bloody snogging/sex scenes between either "Jate" or "Skate". *uuuugh*

    15) As of this exact moment I have/have not already watched the Sri Lanka video:

Yes. I saw it when it was shiny and new.

    16) The as-yet unasked question(s) I'd most like to see all 493 members of the LOST tribe provide their answer(s) to is/are....

Do you think that Ben will or will not eventually be justified in his assertion to Michael that he's one of "the good guys"? Why or why not?

    Bump.

This thread now returns to its usual programming (and may be hijacked again as often as anyone wishes to do so; I think birdwalks which come up along the way are interesting, myself).

Between seasons as we are at the moment would be an ever so perfect time for everyone lurking out there who wants to decloak and play in the LOST Survey to have at it.

    Enjoy!

      Here goes

      1) LOST character(s) I most appreciate and/or admire:

Rose; although Daniel Faraday is starting to grow on me.

      2) LOST character(s) I most adore and/or lust after:

"Lust" is kind of a strong word, but Desmond and Sayid are quite watchable. ;)

      3) LOST character(s) I most despise, loath, find repulsive, and/or shudder at the thought of:

Nikki, Paulo (thank god they're gone). Keamy and Juliet are right up there though.

      4) LOST character(s) I most identify with in the sense that if I opened my eyes and magically found myself incarnated in a body or bodies in LOST-land, then this would most likely be in whom I would manifest:

      Charlotte

      5) Most intriguing conundrum or paradox(es) to date:

The time/space stuff, as well as the role Mrs. Hawking and her ilk play in it.

      6) Most disappointing or stupid shortcoming or error to date:

Trying to fit Nikki and Paulo into the plane crash scene. What were they thinking???

      7) LOST has/has not provoked me to study and think about human nature, philosophy, and/or metaphysics in ways I never have before:

Has not - I'm bent that way to begin with. It's one of the reasons I find the show so appealing. :)

      8) Most/least favorite LOST symbolism and/or symbols:

I like the black/white symbols. I often wonder why the show doesn't use Go. Go is all about balance, which could fit nicely within the show's framework.

      9) Most/least favorite scene(s):

Favorite: I liked the scene in season one where Sayid told Hurley that he was in the Republican Guard. Also, I could watch the entire episode of "The Constant" over and over again.

Visually, I liked the black light blast door, the hieroglyphics, and the bad-trip rave room with Karl.

Least favorite: any scene that requires Micahel to scream "Waaaaaaaaaalt!"

      10) Most/least favorite dialogue quotes:

Most: Sawyer's nicknames are often wildly funny, and I really like Miles' snarky comments.

Least: aside from the "Waaaaalt!" comment above, I'm also not wild about the phrase 'don't tell me what I can't do'.

      11) "As a result of LOST my travel plans with regard to vacationing in Hawaii have been influenced in the following manner:

__XX__Definitely going to Hawaii - I've been to several of the islands, and love them, but only once to Oahu. I'll need to see that particular island again.

      12) Favorite wild guesses and/or elaborate theories of WTHIRGO (What The Hell Is Really Going On):

I don't have any elaborate theories, but I do think that we'll find out that Ben, if not 'one of the good guys', will turn out to be 'one of the not as bad guys'.

      13) I hope to see this happen on LOST:

I hope they resolve most, if not all, of the outstanding questions and conundrums. I'm also hoping for a little more about the numbers and the nature of coincidence/fate. I'd also like to see Penny and Desmond have a happy ending.

      14) I fear to see this happen on LOST:

I'm hoping that we don't get too bogged down with the relationship stuff (Kate/Sawyer/Juliet/Jack). I'd rather spend more time on the mystery of the island, its properties, and how our characters fit into that.

      15) As of this exact moment I have/have not already watched the Sri Lanka video [a hot-link to which is provided in the LOST tribe header]:

I watched it some time ago.

      16) The as-yet unasked question(s) I'd most like to see all 493 members of the LOST tribe provide their answer(s) to is/are.... [responses to Item 16 will be collected, duplicates combined, and the collated results presented in LOST tribe Survey #4-8-15-16-23-42, version 2.0, coming soon to an intertube near you!]

Why do all of the Oceanic 6 have to go back to the island?
