SEE Michael Emerson in town TONIGHT!!!

Hi all... sorry for the late notice, I was just now approached about this -- tonight (Tues 6/24) at the Frameline LGBT Film Festival, Michael Freaking "Ben Linus" Emerson will be at The Victoria Theater for the 7pm screening of his new film "Ready...OK!" There are no more advance tickets available, but they will be sold at the Box Office.... get there early, as it is likely to sell out! YES, he will be there and will take audience questions after the show. Whoa... DUDE!!!

PLUS -- as you wait in line, you will be entertained by the "drag cheerleader" stylings of my alter-ego "Chester" of The COCK-Ts! http://www.cockts.com/

"Ready...OK!" is a comedy about a 10-year-old boy who decides to go out for the cheerleading team at a catholic school, and his fight against the school bureacracy determined to not let little boys be cheerleaders. It looks cute as hell... AND IT'S GOT MICHAEL FREAKING EMERSON IN IT!!! (in a non-villainous, not-creepy role) Description and online trailer can be seen at http://www.frameline.org/festival/film/detail.aspx?id=1366&fid=42

You had better believe I will be getting some pictures and posting them here for y'all... but if anyone can swing this last-minute-but-amazing opportunity to rub elbows with Benjamin Linus, it is highly recomended!!! Approach me (I will be rather conspicuous in my drag cheerleading attire) and mention this Tribe, and I can prolly get you into the afterparty.

-Joe a.k.a. "Chester"

Mystery Tales #40 comic book

Are others on this LOST Tribe bidding on this LOST-lore ebay item now up at $128.50 with 1 day 18 hours remaining? Here is the blurb from the auction description:

"Here is Mystery Tales 40 published by Atlas Comics and featured on the Lost television show on May 8th. Comic is fully complete with lots of great off-beat fantastical stories, including The Hidden Land. Chips on front cover, cover is nearly detached from bottom staple, completely detached from top staple. Comic is tanning and has a two-inch by half-inch piece chipped off the bottom of the back cover. Email me if you'd like a scan of the back cover. Starts at no reserve and $.99. The last copy to be auctioned went for $405. This is a copy I received on May 14th from a source in New Hampshire after an extensive search. Hope the winner enjoys it very much."

If you are already bidding then please PM me and let me know so I do not bid up against you; I am lurking at the moment and if nobody else from amongst our tribe is bidding then I intend to snipe in one shot during the last few seconds of the auction (if my cyber-minions function correctly; sometimes they miscalculate the satellite bounce and node-relay timing and consequently miss ...but not often). If someone from our tribe wins this item or has access to another copy, then please do share a plot summary with us (as is my intention, if I nail it).

Discovery : The Bleed

Discovery

The Bleed is not a universe in itself, but it is defined as the space between parallel universes. The most advanced beings can travel between parallel universes through the Bleed, or, simply, an arterial duct connecting to universes. Travelling through the Bleed is not without danger though and sometimes objects or beings get lost, appearing in times and places they were never meant to go. In addition, the Bleed has mutagenic properties that alter the make-up of any sentient being that enters it directly. The effects can be beneficial or detrimental, depending on the circumstances of the exposure.

The Bleed was officially discovered by a group of scientists working for Stormwatch. They managed to look through the Bleed at a parallel universe using an opening several atoms thick. This universe featured a Jack Hawksmoor in charge of Stormwatch and he observes the scientists. Later it would be revealed that the Bleed had been discovered before; Jenny Sparks had had contact with the Bleed-travellers from Sliding Albion in the early 20th century and the Planetary had catalogued numerous Bleed incursions. The Bleed would be used for less drastic purposes, such as bringing in new episodes of the television series The Prisoner.

When The Authority obtained the Carrier, a vessel capable of travelling through the Bleed, Bleed incursions became far more numerous. To oversee the negative effects of these incursions, the Monarchy was created.

In the series Majestic it has been shown that the Bleed also connects the Wildstorm multiverse to the DC Universe, an idea that was also presented in Planetary/Batman: Night on Earth and "Captain Atom: Armageddon", allowing for crossovers.

In the Authority/Planetary crossover, it was revealed that there is a hostile force operating within the Bleed that seeks out and exterminates Earths. Its first known attack on the Wildstorm Earth was in 1931 in Rhode Island, involving eggs specifically designed to spawn Lovecraftian monsters when touched by humans; a second incursion occurred in 1999 involving killer robots that could self-replicate. The leaders of this force were shown to be a hideous reptilian version of the Authority. A storyline in the Monarchy would reveal this team to be called the High Power and the world-killing force to be Chimaera, an army made up entirely of evil alternate Authorities created by the Authority's frequent travels in the Bleed.

Bleed-spawned alternate Authorities would show up multiple times in the realm of the Easter Bunny. This realm was inadverently created by the powerful Authority member Jenny Quantum after she reads a violent comic book. Most of these doubles were killed.

Welcome to LOST tribe survey #4-8-15-16-23-42 version 1.0, prepared by members of the DHARMA Initiative at the behest of Alvar Hanso and the DeGroots. If you are reading this survey then you already know and have worked with Gerald and Karen DeGroot, founders and masterminds of the DHARMA Initiative. By now, you also know there are many research goals for our joint venture. What you may not know is why we have assembled the DHARMA Initiative and the 493 greatest minds in the world into this LOST tribe of which you are a member. While there are 493 members of this LOST tribe at the moment, until now most of them have remained hidden and are either largely or completely unknown to each other. The time has come --via answers the 493 of you provide to this survey-- for more to become revealed. Please answer any or all of these LOST tribe survey questions in as much or as little explanatory detail as you feel comfortable providing. As with all you've already been told, you are bound by your honor and commitment to keep secret that which you are about learn. Why all the security, all the secrecy? The answer is simple: your research is intended to do nothing less than save the world as we know it.

Oceanic 8: 5 live + 3 dead

So I've been trying to figure out why they named the 3 other survivors they did (in the press conference): Charlie, Libby, and Boone.

I rewatched the finale tonight and the reason for Charlie being named suddenly became very obvious: Charlie spoke with Penny via the radio in The Looking Glass...so there were people off the Island (Penny's people and possibly others) who knew Charlie survived the initial crash. I believe that during the press conference they said that Charlie almost lived to the rescue. This would be a logical thing to say because they would be trying to fit him into the timeline during which he made contact with the outside world.

Now I am trying to figure out if there are equally obvious reasons for Boone and Libby to be named. Can anyone recall any incidents that would indicate Boone and Libby living beyond the initial crash?

My mind is boggling~
Season 4 SPOILER CHAT!

Time for another thread for those of us who don't mind having a wee bit of foreknowledge. Though, with our dear moderator's blessing, I'd like to keep MAJOR spoilers out...so, please, no full blow-by-blow accounts of episodes as yet unaired, or telegraphing the big stuff (deaths, game-changers).

Even we "in the know" like to have SOME surprises. I know that I read a spoiler too far leading up to the S.3 finale and wound up regretting it. So, for example, if there's a major death coming, announcing that would be fair game for this thread...just don't say who it actually is if you know.

That said, that leaves us all manner of territory to cover! Episode centricities, the remaining Oceanic 6 members, who else gets off the island but isn't in the O6, what surprise guests can we expect to see?

I'll start. I DO know who the remaining 2 of the Oceanic 6 are...and it's Jin & Sun, as will be revealed when they get a flashforward in ep. 4.7. Really makes ya wonder about Claire, given Des' prediction, now doesn't it.

I know there will be a major death..."an original 815er"...between this week's episode and episode 8. (Actually, before I heard the bit about it being "an original 815er" I was horrified that it could possibly be Desmond! *WHEW*) That said, I dunno who it is, and don't want to know before the reveal.

I know that we'll be seeing Libby again in ep. 8, which is speculated to be a Michael-centric episode. There's a double "tee-hee" if ever I saw one...

Upcoming known centricities:
4.4, "Eggtown", Kate flashforward (2/21)
4.5, "The Constant", Desmond flashback (2/29)
4.6, "The Other Woman", Juliet flashback (3/7)
4.7, "Ji Yeon", Jin/Sun flashforward (3/14)
4.8, "Meet Kevin Johnson", Michael flashback (4/24?, with 5 more eps to be produced and air starting 5/1)

With production on 5 more eps. starting 3/10, it's unlikely we'll get any decent spoilers about those eps until then, alas.

Lastly, where do the spoiler-minded find good Lost spoilers? Well, so glad you asked!

Turning the Dharma Wheel: what is behind that wall?

Finally I've had a moment to catch up on reading the new threads and comments posted in LOST tribe since the season finale (which I thought was spectacular).

I've been most looking forward to seeing a rich discussion on the wheel which Ben turned to "move" the island but except for one post (Chopper's comment: "oh, and another thing, did you wheal Ben had to turn to move the island remind you of a Dharmacakra?") and another comment somewhere about the wheel looking like an old sailing ship's wheel, I am not finding such a discussion -thus this new thread.

Yes, absolutely, in reply to Chopper's question, the Dharma Wheel is exactly and precisely that which immediately came to my mind when I saw Ben lay hands on it and start struggling both physically and emotionally.

Google turns up all sorts of excellent reads on the Buddhist Wheel of Law, or Dharma Wheel.
http://www.google.com/search?q=dharma+wheel&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Clearly, whatever this Dharma Wheel is connected to behind that wall is at the heart of the LOST island's properties and mystery. What could that be?

Is it natural (in the sense of "not made by human or alien hands or tentacles") or is it an artifact created by humans or some other intelligence?

The physical location of this powerful device or phenomenon behind the wall and connected to the Dharma Wheel appears to be in the arctic. I suggest arctic because of other clues: polar bears only live in the arctic, not antarctic, and Penny has geeks up there listening for Desmond to break radio silence ...but it could as easily be in the high Himalayas or anywhere cold (even atop the snow-capped peak of Hawaii's Big Island).

Thoughts and comments?

So what exactly was effected by putting all that metal in the vault? The island's move? So what was Ben doing behind the blown-out wall? It seems to me that turning the wheel is more likely the thing that moved the island. For all we know, putting the metal in the vault and blowing it up wasn't just to get at the wheel. Perhaps Ben had another purpose in mind that he wasn't sharing with Locke. Was it a case of "If I can't have it, then no one will?"

How's that for a title!

In another thread there was a speculation that Charlotte might be Ben's daughter. I'm sooooo sorry that I forgot who posted it. Please raise your hand and say, "shimmy shimmy cocopuff" if it was you.

I adore this idea! How long ago was the purge? Maybe he sent her off island before it happened or the mother found out what a crazy bastard Ben was and split with the kid. Maybe the whole pregnant women dying is a new fad that has caught on.

Or maybe she is Windmore's daughter...come on, doesn't everyone have an illegitiment Austrailian daughter? It is the coolest fad around. It would be cool if Ben meant that he'd kill Charlotte instead of Penny.

Of all the characters on Lost, Desmond is the one I love the most, and now that we know the outcome (or part of the outcome) for the Oceanic 6 .. I'm worried for Desmond's fate. Call me a hopeless romantic, but it saddens me to think that Desmond or Penny will never be reunited.

Anyone know the details of this - apparently on DarkUFO someone spoiled the finale for people... Seems like someone now called "the vandal" had insider-information and leaked it and people are mad now...

Does anyone know about this, like how did he share the info, in a spoiler thread or what?

Have 'yal seen this? It is hilarious, and so cleverly done!

I just stumbled across it by accident while looking for the Gilligan's Island theme song (a friend had just sent me a hideous It's A Small World After All music clip from YouTube and I was attempting to return the favor). While looking for a decent clip with the Gilligan's Island opening I noticed this...

"WOW" Thread Deleted

I don't typically delete entire threads (or even portions of threads) as I don't believe in "over-moderation" and try to leave this tribe as open to fluid discussion as possible, BUT, that thread started with the biggest punchline/spoiler of the whole season and was simply labeled "WOW." I'm sure more than one person had the misfortune of opening it prematurely and finding out something he/she didn't wanna know yet just because of a poorly labeled topic.

No, technically the info is not a spoiler cause the episode has already aired, HOWEVER, if you've not seen the episode yet and read such a thread, you will be spoiled. Make sense? Just choose good subject lines, that's all, really.

So, after the initial spoiling nature of that thread, there were a whole lotta people insulting each other's netiquette, and whatever. I looked though the thread for anything substantial and worth salvaging, and just didn't see it. So, it's gone. If you didn't see it, then what you missed was the reveal from the last 2 seconds of the finale, and then a bunch of people in this tribe insulting each other and/or criticizing each other's posting styles.

Sorry, if you are offended by the deletion. The reasons to delete outweighed the reasons to keep.

In the meantime, I am going to re-post my thoughts on choosing subjects/titles of threads:

--------

However, I DO think that's why it's good that we are now labeling the episode specific threads with titles that have the ep name and date so people can easily search those threads out AND why it's also a good reason for people to carefully consider thread titles. For example: naming a thread "Hurley's Comic Book" would give people a good idea what to expect in that thread, and they would know whether they were interested in reading it before they even opened it. "Mirror Moon Matter Theory of LOST" is also a good thread title.

Some really POOR titles are, "OMG!" "WTF!" "Tonight's Episode" "Was it just me?" and "They're all dead???" The first 4 are terrible thread titles because they give the readers/posters no clue whatsoever WHAT to expect when they read. The last thread title is a spoiler title, and no one wants to be spoiled before they even open a thread.

Give thought to thread titles before starting a new thread. That's really the best advice I can give as far as posting goes. Think well and thou shalt be well thunk upon. :)

NEW LOST ARG TRIBE

Hey everyone,

Sorry I have been off tribe for a while. Last time I started The Lost Experience Tribe tfor the ARG between S2 & S3. We have a new ARG Now and hence I am opening the doors again for members to join

http://tribes.tribe.net/thelostarg

I think it might be wise to keep the ARG discussion over there as these ARG's get really intense and before you know it threads have taken over here. It is a moderated Tribe but if you ask me you can join. I want people to participate so that's why you need to request for access. If this is an issue, let me know and I can remove the request for access.

Right now there's a lot of old junk and I need to get rid of it, but I did start a welcome thread.

See you over on the other side!

So, I know it wasn't exactly the showdown of the year, but the designs look great, and the Dharma/Tribe logo easily snagged the crown! Sonya's winning design currently appears as our tribe's main photo. :)

So, next up? T-shirts!

I'll talk to Sonya and we'll figure out how we're gonna do this. Once we have the design uploaded to a site, we'll let you know how you can go about ordering yours!

Congrats again! And mostly thanks for rising to the challenge!!!

Get your Lost theory graded by Lindelof and Cuse

And it's due tomorrow (April 16th)!!!!

Attention, 'Lost' theorists
http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/lost-theory-solicitation.htm?csp=1

Here's your chance to have your hypothesis graded by the experts – Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, executive producers of the ABC drama (returning April 24, 10 p.m. ET/PT). In 200 words or less, give us your explanation of any or all of the myriad mysteries: the island, the survivors of Flight 815, The Others, Dharma and any of the other baffling questions that have made Lost TV's top brain-teaser.

USA TODAY will publish some of the best contributions, online and in print — and forward a handful to the Lost braintrust who will evaluate them for originality, completeness, logic, etc., without spoiling future episodes by indicating if your theory is right, wrong or really wrong. (Disclaimer: No real Lost secrets will harmed in this process.)

Follow these rules — or else your e-mail will be eaten by the smoke monster:

•E-mail your masterpiece to jdeerwes@usatoday.com by Wednesday, April 16 at 5 p.m. ET

•Please include your contact information: Full name, city, and a phone number where you can be reached for confirmation

•Keep it to 200 words or less

•Use the subject line "Lost theory"

LOST Tribe get-together at Black Rock

Hi All-

Who amongst the 500 of us are Burners and how many amongst the LOST Tribe Burners will be at Black Rock City on the playa of Nevada's surreal Black Rock Desert for this year's Burn?

Does anyone want to get together for LOST Tribe conversation and refreshments in the desert? I'd enjoy meeting some of the other LOST Tribe folks in person. We can either keep this rendezvous private and within our tribe by only discussing here within the list a time, date, and place for getting together, or we could put a general invitation into the What-Where-When schedule book (the one each person receives a copy of from the greeters at the gate) calling all LOST-loving Burners at large to join us at a specific time/date/place, ...or both!

In years past I've seen plenty of DHARMA Initiative logos and suchlike wandering around out there on the playa. Is anyone here part of an actual LOST-themed camp? I've assumed from the first moment the Black Rock came up in LOST that the writers have some Burning Man connection. How fun it would be --like extra icing on the already yummy cake-- if we (or other folks who are doing an actual LOST-themed event at Burning Man this year) were to set a time, date, and place for a LOST Tribe get-together and then it happens some of the LOST writers, crew, or actors also show up, too!

Windmore must have captured someone from the island before all this went down. How else would he have know where everything is...all the stations, the Others village, etc... hummmm.

I'm going to throw down a theory right now, people.

Stand back!

Ben's little childhood girl friend is not only the one who told Windmore everything about the island but is also Penny's mom. Oh yea. Smoke on those apples for a while!

Wow, this episode blew me away. They are really starting to give a lot of information away now. Next week is going to blow our minds I am sure. I was so happy to see Sayid reunited with Nadia. I was glad to know Jack finally got the truth about Claire but how hard was it for him not to show emotion???? He is not allowed to let on he knew Claire at all.
There was just so much in this episode. Hurley getting the car with the bad numbers was freaky!!!
Loved it when Sawyer said to Jack "Hold on there Shaggy. Not going to let you die alone." That was perfect!!!
And can't wait to see more of the Orchid station.
So much to process. And Richard the ageless wonder is back - hooray!!!!

Ben's Gambit will totally work. It will take time, but it will work.

Locke will somehow avoid his normal "Oops, I Did it Again!" problem.... He will refrain from destroying Orchid Station! Yay! He will basically fulfill his part of the mission.

The island will move in time, not space, and when it does, the boat will not explode because someone, Daniel or Sayid, will have dismantled the explosives by then.

Richard will capture Keamy. Hopefully he will use some creepy Other methods... ;)

Ben will be fine. Obviously there is some significant action that has to happen to get all the Oceanic 6 off the island...

I really want Strom to play a bigger part in the finale... his ability is pretty cool and he is kinda fun in his self-serving, loveless way....

WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS?

Of all the actors on the show, I would have thought Emerson or O'Quinn. But I guess Matthew Fox is the 'star' of the show when it comes down to it. He's been presented as the central character from the beginning.

LOST Tribe Tee Shirt Contest!!!

Okay, here it is...the official tee shirt contest thread!

So, I started bouncing around an idea in this thread:

http://lost-tv.tribe.net/thread/be335a27-b0f6-461f-8521-9188a5013a3b

And I'm thinkin' it's a good idea! Or at least fun and interesting... :)

Tribe was supposed to make tees for its "premium" members, but it seems to be fairly low priority for them, so I was thinking, why not a LOST Tribe t-shirt? I know I spend at least 50% of my time on Tribe checking in over here and most of the people I interact with on Tribe on a regular basis are LOST peeps, so let's celebrate our great tribe in high fashion (or low fashion as the case may be).

Beginning today, May 4, 2008, LOST Tribe members may submit designs for an official LOST Tribe Tee. Here's how this will work:

1) Entrants may submit up to 2 designs each.
2) All entries will be posted in the photo gallery section of this tribe.
3) You will also include a link to each submission in this thread so people can find your designs easily.
4) Designs can be submitted until Monday, May 12 at 11:59PM PDT.
5) Designs submitted after that will be ineligible for contest consideration.
6) Starting at midnight on Tuesday May 13, LOST Tribe members may vote for their 2 favorite designs by leaving a comment under the relevant design in the photo gallery.
7) Voting will be open for 1 week, until 11:59 PM on Monday, May 19.
8) On Tuesday, May 20, 2008, I will add up the number of votes for each design and announce the winner.
9) The winning design will be made available to order via an online t-shirt distributer (zazzle?) and you will be able to order this design on a few different styles of shirt.
10) The winning design will also be the official LOST Tribe icon.

PLEASE NOTE: Please create your design at a high resolution using clean lines and high res art so it prints nicely. If you are only familiar with creating images for the web, please be aware that print resolution is much higher. I would recommend that you create your image at a minimum of 5 in X 5 in at 300 ppi which is equivalent to 1500 px x 1500 px. A bit higher than this works too, but anything less will look like poo when printed.

Some ideas that have already come up in the other thread that i would love to see brought to fruition are:
1) The Dharma Initiative (Dharma logo) wifebeater tee
2) The ultra cheesy Tiger Beat/Teen Beat tee with pix of Jin, Sayid, Desmond and Sawyer in neon hearts
3) The Desmond "See you in the next life, Brutha!" tee

Also, although there can only be one winner, it may be possible to upload the second and third favorite designs to be available for purchase as well.

Oh, and the winning shirt will have some small text on the back (between the shoulders) that says "LOST Tribe."

Best of luck and have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!

:)

I'm not one for spoilers, but I do always enjoy knowing whose stories are coming up~

I think Xanadu posted a list of centricities for the first 8 episodes that turned out to be 100% correct, but I haven't seen Xanadu around here lately.

Any word on whose stories we're gonna hear in the next 5 eps?

Maybe Sonya knows...

What connection can we make from the flash forwards about Hurley's curse to the "current" events on the island? What connection or meaning does Hurley's presence on the island represent? Is he there simply because of this curse? Should we believe this curse to be real or not? And is it this curse that makes Hurley "special?" I know in previous threads it was theorized that Hurley signified "good luck" because of this curse. Can anyone share in this idea?

LOST End Date Confirmed (...potential Spoiler? Link to end date of LOST is given)

At a small gathering of local Tribe friends here in Anchorage one of them mentioned to me the end date of LOST's run is known and confirmed. Even though this "news" is one year and twelve days old at this point, just in case anyone else out there also had no idea, here is a link to the info:

http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2007-05-06-lost_N.htm

Somehow I had missed hearing this -or, at least, having this info register in my brain.

I had been figuring on a shorter amount of time/smaller number of episodes remaining to the run than seems to actually be the case. Given this much time remaining to the saga it seems as if almost anything could happen.

How impressive that ABC would commit in advance to sticking with a series of such lengthy duration. Remember when HBO cancelled Carnivale after folks became fascinated with the story and characters? That sucked.

Orchid Station Orientation Film

The film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gERdALb5vQ

Previous pithy detailed discussion of film's contents in the thread "Staged Plane Crash Bollocks?":
http://lost-tv.tribe.net/thread/9a77c20c-0578-4d84-b3b2-28aff12767e3

Question: Any notions on what that mysterious object is which is seen falling to Dr. Halliwaxcandle's screen left just as he says "elaborate safety measures have been put in place..."?

To me it looks like a small block (perhaps approximately 5cm x 5cm x 5cm) with a tiny white parachute attached and tailing plumed above it as it falls (I'll post up a still image of the frozen screen with this enigmatic object shown, in the LOST tribe gallery). What could the significance of this plummeting puzzler possibly be?

A brief glimpse of this enigmatic falling object occurs just before the Schrodinger's Bunny 15 replicant seemingly apparates out of thin air onto a shelf behind Dr. Halliwaxcandle, getting him all fired up, at 1 minute 23 seconds into the clip.

Hi everyone...I just wanted you all to know that you'll be able to read *even more* of my "Lost" musings over at http://docarzt.com

The good Doc (aka Jon Lachonis) solicited new contributors, I replied, we had a lovely IM chat, and my first piece was posted today. I'm kind of trying to fill in the gaps left by all the myriad other recappers and focus on small things, often not in the "A-story", which are being neglected but which might also be more important than we know.

Here's a link to the piece:

http://www.docarzt.com/lost-theories/lost-theories-409-and-410-look.php

I'll be doing one for each episode, plus coming up with other ways to contribute. I will, of course, still be posting here as well but I just figured it was time to start letting people outside of Tribe feel the joy. *chuckles*

So...what IS Abaddon's deal, anyway?

From another thread, bundt said the following:

<<Abbadon is owed. He tells Locke to go on a walkabout. Locke says he can't. Abbadon tells him that he will eventually change his mind, and when he does, Locke will owe him one. To my mind that statement right there is key. First because Locke owes him. Second, because the good guys' advice doesn't come with a price tag, which means Abbadon is not a good guy. Not that I ever thought he was, but this confirms it to me.>>

Abaddon is enigmatic with a capital "ENIGMATIC".

bundt's point about the "good guys" not asking for favors in return for their information is well-taken, but that said I'm not entirely sure that he's Widmore's man, either. So far, I'm all but certain we haven't seen the full purpose of Charlotte and Miles, at the very least, or possibly Faraday as well. And they do NOT seem to be working toward the same goals as Keamy & Krew.

He certainly doesn't seem to be affiliated with Ben & RIchard, either.

I do have an intuition about him, though...what if he's working with Ms. Hawking and Brother Campbell, and they're an as-yet-little-known third player in the Ben/Widmore conflict? Were that the case, then Abaddon could very well be infiltrating Widmore's organization for that group, whose ends we don't yet know except that they do seem to be concerned with the fate of the planet (given Hawking's entreaty to Desmond that his button-pushing and/or key-turning would prove to be the salvation of us all from some unnamed dire fate).

Or, do you guys think I'm just over-complicating things and that there really are only two factions—Widmore's & Ben's, with our Losaways being "wild cards"—fighting over the Island?

Island time vs real time

I am so confused about this.

OK, when Sayid and Desmond went to the boat weren't they gone for a day or so island time vs a couple of hours real time before being able to contact Jack?

So, wouldn't that mean that the time on the island moves faster than real time?
So, would they have been gone from the real world for less time than they had thought? How much time did the reporter say had gone by when he was asking about Aaron? Does it match up to the time they were on the island....plus a few days for government containment...or whoever contained them?

I think that the island's faster time could explain why women's bodies can't handle preganacies...it happens too quick for their pods to catch up. Could be.

Ms Hawkings (Stephen Hawkings, anyone?) seemed a bit desparate. I bet she was lying.

IF she was SOOO confident that "it doesn't matter/ the universe self-corrects" then pray tell why was she so urgently concerned about Desmond and the ring? Hm?

If you can't change anything, then why the concern? Why reveal yourself to Desomnd at all? Don't tell me it's out of a neighborly desire to help our boy adjust to his new way of experiencing life! A little precog-to-precog mentoring session, from the goodness of her heart... No,. Ms Hawkings revealed herself to Desomond because she is desparate and she knows he CAN change things.

I bet Charlie will live... perhaps someone else will die... and then Desomond will realize that for himself.

Balancing the Male-Female Imbalance

As I prepped dinner for the family last evening --trying to not lose a finger in the process while simultaneously chopping vegetables and pondering-- it occurred to me the complaint I've read a number of times about LOST's male characters so far having much more presence and sway than the females characters (a complaint expressed with varying degrees of angst and outrage behind the assertion) might indeed be justified.

"If so," I mused over the celery, "then is this imbalance of masculine and feminine power accidental, a product of either naive or cynical sexism on the writers’ part, or deliberate and intentional as a calculated essential element of the LOST formula?" Given how little seems accidental or meaningless in LOST, I'd figure this is intentional.

If intentional, then how would they plan for the imbalanced distribution of power vis a vis male and female roles to become resolved?

Temporally, I am guessing, with the female characters stepping forward much more distinctly in the remainder of this season and during the next season -probably to fix many of the messes the males have made and perhaps, ultimately, to save the day. If early in LOST the males dominated and the problematic juxtapositions consequently worsened, then logically --if the male-female dharma must balance out-- the females should be taking lead in the latter portion of LOST’s unfolding, proving themselves key to resolving the problems. This would balance the imbalance of male and female significance in the whole equation, overall.

So perhaps Penelope, Kate, Sun, Juliette, Rose, and Charlotte will emerge more strongly as characters in the remainder of LOST. Also, I’d expect we will see Naomi again, as well as Alex, Libby, Rousseau and some of the other women of LOST who died in a distinctly sacrificial manner (does this include Shannon?) ...versus simply expiring via their dharma becoming balanced --like Anna Lucia-- or just as red shirts (like the Other gal gunned down by Keamy’s mercs outside a house in New Otherton).

Since my guess is Locke, Jack, and Ben all must work cooperatively together in order to succeed (and maybe Desmond, Michael, and Sayid as well), in order for the balance to be maintained this would mean some females who are not particularly trusting of one another will also be doing likewise: Juliette, Kate, and Kim -perhaps cooperating with Penelope? (I am figuring Charlotte as being one of Abaddon’s dark minions).

I think I’ll modify my previous guess a little bit: instead of Jack being the one to do whatever heroic sacrificial act it is that saves and/or heals the time-space rift and/or Aaron-Jacob (and thus the island and the planet), I am guessing it will be Kate, instead, who has the really critical sacrificial role. They will still have to operate as a team and will still end up as Adam and Eve, but with significantly more emphasis for Kate than I had been figuring previously. It is not that she --instead of he-- will be The One, but rather that they will be equally essential members of a critically important team, not the hero and his cute sidekick; my guess is Jack would fail in doing whatever it is he must do successfully at the critical moment if it were not for Kate taking the lead.

Did you hear that?!? I thought I just heard a collective gasp of horror followed by a howl of outrage from hundreds of Kate-hating Jack worshipers.

Personally, I’d still prefer for Jack and Kate to nobly sacrifice themselves attempting to save Aaron from Abaddon and it turn out to be Penelope and Desmond who end up as Adam and Eve.

What's Up With Claire? Aaron?

Some of you think she's dead, and/or that Papa Shepphard may be alive still.... All I know is it's weird she would abandon Aaron, and it's weird she would be hanging out in a creepy-ass dirty cabin with Papa in the pitch dark.. wearing a strange, smug Mona Lisa smile.

I think the Psychic was right: Aaron is special and he should be raised by Mom or else Aaron risks becoming evil like Damian in The Omen. The Psychic never had a couple lined up in Los Angeles to adopt Aaron, that was a ruse to get Claire on flight 815. which he hoped would end in her raising Aaron on the Island.

Papa Shepphard doesn't want Claire to raise her baby. Since Papa is is hanging out in Jacob's cabin he probably represents Jacob's desires as well... Then there is another camp (The Psychic, Charlie~Hurley) who have expressed grave fear of other people raising Aaron ..... So far nobody has commented Kate's ability to raise Aaron, but both the Psychic and a prophetic "Asylum Hurley" have served as pretty sobering Voices From The Beyond in their pleas to get Aaron specific parenting.... (In the last episode Jack was told by Hurley who had been told by Charlie that he should not be raising Aaron for instance)

Sacrifice

The whole notion of sacrifice seems very prominent and significant in LOST.

Especially intriguing to me is the repeated assertion that "the island demands" the sacrifice of human lives -as with Boone, Locke's father (initially when he was lashed to a stone pillar and then for reals later inside the Black Rock), Charlie's sacrifice in the Hydra, and so on. Why would the island demand human lives be sacrificed? That is, to put the question in a way which is perhaps more operationally useful, how would it be that whatever mechanism we are calling "the island" would actually need--as in require--lives to be sacrificed in order for it to function and/or for its goals to be realized?

Here is everything I found on sacrifice over at Lostpedia-
http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Sacrifice

Seems to me an explanation with regard to "the island's" need for human lives to be LOST could be either:

1) certain people must perish in specific ways at specific moments in order for other individuals to advance onward to reach essential realizations, balancings of dharma, and physical juxtapositionings ...this so later on when those still-living key persons, in turn, need to exercise free will in order to act in just a certain way they will indeed be in the right places at the right times and have the specific perspective and will needed to do so,

and/or

2) the "island" (and I do not buy for an instant that what is meant by "the island" is really just a lump of unintelligent rock and coconut trees) needs human sacrifices to operate much like an automobile needs gasoline and oil to be able to drive down the road. Somehow, the life force of humans (or, at least, of specific humans) is fuel for the mechanism, the energy source powering its continued operation. If the "island" is indeed an obligate humanivore then it absolutely must continue to eat people or else it starves to death and dies.

It is interesting that while ---for whatever mysterious reason(s)-- the island demands human lives be LOST, no new human lives can be gained on the island. Is this radical imbalance another of those dynamic dark-and-light twinned opposite pairings? Women --the goddess principle, vessels of life-- cannot give birth to new life if they conceive on the island, while at the same time "the island demands" life be sacrificed. Hmmm.

Moreover, if we reflect for a moment, it occurs to mind that while Ana Lucia and Libby and the two hot Other chicks hidden together down in the Hydra (being all lonely and having needs in their wet tank tops) --as well as many other women-- did indeed all die, perhaps their deaths were more connected to their dharma becoming completely balanced and not in the nature of being sacrifices demanded by the island. Their dharma complete, and thus those women's lives here in this world complete, at that exact instant it is therefore immediately "time to go! NOW!" Those women died on the spot, yes, but maybe by a different pathway or phenomenon being at work than that of the island demanding human sacrifices. Same deal for the red shirt males (like Oceanic 815's pilot). By contrast, though, the three definite high-profile human sacrifices explicitly named as being just exactly that --human sacrifices demanded by the island-- have all been pivotally important males: the beautiful Boone (a martyred innocent Christ figure if ever there was one; "Boone" literally means "a beneficial gift or kind assistance freely given"), Locke's father, and Charlie. Maybe something in the broken symmetry of the electromagnetic anomaly event is skewing the metaphysical dharmaworks-wave-particles on the male/female axis such that the discontinuity is literally a matter of life and death for the men and women involved? This notion, in turn, suggests noble servant Ben acting desperately as midwife to the birth of life, healer of the timespace wound, and holder of the bridge between worlds instead of just being a malicious, ratty, and ubersmart little bastard.

What are the other explanations I am overlooking &/or logical contradictions I have naively wandered into? Implications flowing from the articulations of sacrifice in LOST? Why is sacrifice such a big element in so many of the character's development and how have those sacrifices manifested to date? Perhaps most interestingly, what are the sacrifices yet to come and who will be making them, to what effect?

Comments? Guesses?

i don't get to watch the latest episode until a couple of days after air date, so i stay away from the boards until after i've watched the show. starting w/the Apr 24 ep, i was not able to watch for over a week. i watched the # of unread posts rise and rise and rise....
finally i clicked on the lost tribe just to kick it back down the list, only to see an ungodly number of new posts reappear.
is anyone else feeling overwhelmed by the # of posts?
i'm in a music discussion group on yahoo that got so-o-o-o-o busy, that i just set my options to 'no mail, web only' and ignored it for a year or more. i go back and it seems many others had the same idea b/c the # of posts/month had dropped dramatically.
some of the posting guidelines in other groups (or tribes as well, ftm) include: no 'me, too' posts; no inflammatory posts....

uh, ok, brain phart here.

hey bundt! do you remember those guidelines from the Incidentalist?

"Australia's the key to the whole game."

It'll be interesting to see how this line uttered by Hurley at the beginning of last week's episode (during the game of Risk being played by Hurley, Sawyer, and Locke) plays out. Hurley's exact line is, "I can't believe you're just givin' him Australia. Australia's the key to the whole game." Sawyer replies, "Says you."

With what we know of 815's origins and each character's story somehow bringing him/her to Australia to line him/her up to be on that flight, I think Hurley's words will prove quite prophetic.

Also, did anyone else notice a hint of an Australian accent in Widmore? I'd always thought he was British, but during his last conversation with Ben (at the end of that episode), I thought I detected a slight Australian bend to it. Anyone else?

Four-Toed Statue: Place your bets!

Now that we are seeing actual time-travel in concert with manned jumps to geographical locations such as the Tunisian desert, the day of Four-Toed reckoning must be fast approaching.

Is the Four-Toed Foot an artifact created by the DHARMA Initiative just to mess with people’s heads? An artifact of an ancient lost human civilization? An artifact of a lost alien civilization? An artifact of a far-future human-become-alien civilization? Something else entirely? Please place your bets and share your wondrous theories.

My guess is the huge four-toed foot was once connected to an enormous statue standing gigantically bestride a harbor entrance ( ala http://www.7wonders.info/colossus-of-rhodes.php and http://www.qsl.net/sv2ael/sv2ael.files/faroi/main/colosos.htm ) in mythic Colossus of Rhodes fashion, that we will see the entire statue and landscape behind it as the Black Rock approaches the island in full sail and passes beneath the already-ancient statue into the harbor ...and that we will be shocked at whose face is seen on the statue.

... that you spend so much time here and care so much about this show? I am just wondering.

In my last relationship we had declared our monogamy and our love and met family members before I admitted to my guilty pleasure..

Mercs versus Smokey

Having myself just returned from the jungle, last night I saw the two newest LOST episodes on videotape and so can now finally start reading and enjoying LOST tribe discussion threads again (at least, all the non-Spoiler threads). It has taken all my self-discipline over the last couple weeks to _not_ open and read enticing LOST tribe discussions!

Everything in the two newest episodes made sense to me (and fits congruent with my own Grand Unified Theory of LOST) except for one aspect: how could mere mercenaries armed with guns possibly survive a head-on fight duking it out with Smokey--kicking, gouging, screaming, shooting, and all--with completely murderous intention?

After the lead mercenary, Keamy, executes Alex and Ben recovers enough from his shock to take action (part of that action seemingly involving siccing Smokey the Monster onto the mercenaries) we see Smokey roar in onto their position and overwhelm them like a Dark Matter sandworm of Dune. Screams and shots are heard as the mercenaries fight Smokey. I figured "That is the fatal end of them, and good riddance!" ...but then Keamy and at least two other mercenaries appear again, still alive, later on.

I would have thought this outcome all but impossible, like three mice whupping the ass of an enraged grizzly bear in a beastie-brawl. So. The possibilities would seem to be:

1) [Sing this to the tune of "I fought the law, and the law won"] Smokey fought the mercs, and the mercs won.
2) Smokey deliberately allowed the mercs to live even though they were doing their damned best to kill Smokey.
3) Smokey killed the mercs and then took their form later on just to mess with Sawyer & Company's heads.
4) ____________________________________________________ (Fill in this blank, please).

So we know all these dead people appear on the island and seems like up until now they said a little bit and then vanished. Seems like from the preview for this week they actuallly have a normal interaction conversation. So what's up with the dead people. I'm going to go with the idea that they are ghosts but something about the island allows people to see them OR that they are residual energy just the image of people replaying itself. What do you guys think?

Maybe there are 2 kinds of "immunities" at play here.. One that has to do with a gentleman's agreement to not kill family members... Another one is actually based on Island Physics... due to their time travel, certain people like Michael and Ben and probably Widmore, can not be killed or it would create an anomaly - fate and science can not allow it.

(BTW This thought is based on that Hot Theory I posted a few weeks ago.... it's really worth a read)

Being Respectful on Tribe

Hi Guys :)

I'm not gonna make too big a deal of this because I think this is one of the most considerate, friendly, and respectful tribes on Tribe, but from time to time we get people who blast other people and seem to think that's okay.

I've noticed that the most common way in which this happens is when people do not own their opinions as opinions and instead state them as fact. Your opinion can be whatever you believe, but do not assume that what you believe is correct or that other people are wrong if they do not agree. Instead of blasting someone else, just say you "disagree." Also make it clear that what you are stating is YOUR opinion and not some proven fact that you read on Lostpedia or heard in a podcast. Or if you did hear it in a podcast or read it on Lostpedia, then say so and put a reference link.

Anyway, like I said...I'm not gonna make too big a deal of thisl...I just want to keep the climate in here friendly, so all I'm asking is that when you post, be nice. Disagree, but be nice.

Okay, carry on~

Frontier Psychiatrist as partial LOST source material, inspiration, &/or tribute toward?

At the back of my mind there has long been a sense I've been overlooking or forgetting something about twinned pairs of similar opposites. A few moments ago it finally came to me where I have indeed seen pairs of twinned opposites before: it was in a music video. The sets of twins (or near-twins) are light and dark, intellectual and primal, set in opposition to both each other and in opposition to the other pair.

I did a keyword search in the LOST tribe database before making this post and did not find any previous threads on this topic; if such exists already then please forgive the oversight and point me in the direction of that URL.

The Avalanche's "Frontier Psychiatrist" came out in 2001. The pilot episode of LOST was first broadcast on September 22, 2004. So, bits of LOST could be inspired by this music and video, it could serve as a source of sorts for some aspects, or parts of LOST could be in tribute to this music and video. A bit of a reach perhaps, yet there are actually quite a number of overlaps or similarities if considered carefully, perhaps beyond the number which would be predicted by sheer unconnected random chance.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8BWBn26bX0

Here is a partial list of elements in Frontier Psychiatrist which strike me as overlapping, are similar in stetting or flavor, or otherwise seem in some way as if they could be connected with LOST:

"Frontier Psychiatrist": crazy mind-stuff and head-games on the the edge of the known, where the known meets and interacts with the unknown.

Dexter: means "right-handed" and/or "skilled at manipulation"

Kirk: means "church" in Deutsch; all sorts of church stuff in LOST from Eko to Charlie to Aaron's baptism to Rose's faith. (Kirk is also an antagonistic authoritarian figure like unto Charles Widmore or Michael Abaddon)

Mrs. Fishbourne or Mrs. Fishborn: could be variously interpreted. The piscean symbol of the fish represents the dawning of a new age, or the church, or the messiah -so her name could mean "the new age or messiah carried by or given birth by this woman" or simply "married woman who carries fish."

Truancy, "expulsion is the only answer," "criminally insane": being absent from where one is supposed to be at the time s/he is supposed to be there, craziness of diametrically opposed systems in collision and conflict misinterpreting and misunderstanding each other; mistrust

Two sets of twins: broken symmetry and fractured wholes, set in yin-yang duality

Light twins: intellectual nature, set in internal conflict or opposition within itself; fractured yin

Dark twins: primal nature set in internal conflict or or opposition within itself; fractured yang

"I challenge you to a duel!": or perhaps even to a duality, one aspect attempting to consume the other, Ouroboros-like

"That boy needs therapy!" punitive male refrain: LOST character's accusations of insanity

Women in the rhythm section: keeping the pattern while the male vocals are yelling this and that (like Sun planting her garden, Rose washing the laundry, and women being pregnant while the guys swing from trees, beat their chests, and fling bananas at each other)

Ghosts seen and heard from behind the veil: spooky metaphysical dead-people-still-here-sort-of stuff, entities on the frontier between the living and the dead; dead people being seen on the island; the voices

Coconut: crazy as a, on a tropical island

Sea turtle-human chimera: more tropical island imagery, human and other animal natures chopped and blended together

Teeth: dream symbols for aggression, death, and/or potency or lost potency (especially as bared in skulls and when teeth are chattering, chipping, and breaking)

"Avalanches above, business continues as usual below": arctic as the higher realm, tropics as lower realm ("as above, so below" notion), a seeming time-delayed connection or time-delayed reaction between realms as between the arctic and tropics (a polar bear farts in the arctic and three months later a typhoon hits a tropical island)?

"I felt strangely hypnotized" -in at least every other episode someone is drugged, or mesmerized by big-eyed Ben like a bird being "hypnotized" in front of a snake, or is otherwise disoriented by being blasted out of the Hatch or dropped through time

"I was in another world!" spoken by a fellow dressed up like a philosopher or lawyer: literally being in another world, with haldf the cast named after philosophers and proponents of natural and moral law versus each-man-for-himself jungle law

Russian sailor: Mikhail?

Cuckoo clock with the curious cat which ate the canary inside: insane distortions of time (and inside it all the writers who know all but are keeping it a secret -except for the couple of canary feathers they accidentally hiccup forth every now and then by accident or design)

Horse, horse neighing: Kate's black horse?

Rectangles: mystic geometries and allignments

Tall sexy seductive female temptresses; muscular male dwarf: more yin and yang out of balance frustrations as reflected in sexually speaking male dwarfism (Ben) and female potency (Juilette) and strange reversals thereof (Jin becoming megaferttile, Locke "rising" and being "erect" --in fact, you just cannot keep Locke down, even if you shoot him and leave him for dead in a pit of skeletons-- versus all the women dying before giving birth)

"The man with the golden eyeball": skeleton with a magical all-seeing eye -Jacob?

"I promised my girlfriend" plus "Cowboys and Indians" plus the abundant other sexual desire and frustration imagery in general (including the hot Asian girls playing musical instruments): sexual tension and the push-pull of desire and frustration between the male and female duality

Hypnotist's pinwheel: spinning dark and light pattern

Hypnotist: looks like Ben (click the pause button and check; he actually does look like Ben, and what are the odds of a hypnotist selected at random from a music video --or movie-- looking like Ben? I bet if we went through every last music video and movie made in the last fifty years with a hypnotist character and compared every single hypnotist in all of them against Ben we would find only one reasonable match- this one)

Light Dove plus "Can you think of anything that talks, other than a person?": higher nature speaking, intellect, yang (yang qualities are characterized as active, light, masculine, positive, upward-seeking, producing and corresponding to the daylight hours)

Dark Ape plus banging on drums and chasing the light Dove: lower nature, sexual desire, yin (yin qualities are characterized as passive, dark, feminine, negative, downward-seeking, consuming and corresponding to the night-time)

"Ski-Surfing": tropical ocean wave curling over with a direct unseen suggestion of a connection to the avalanche earlier seen in the arctic ("as above, so below" again)

Mariachi band: Latino-Hispanic connection; Hugo and Ana-Lucia

--plus--

Notice the retro 16mm flavor of the film clips and hokey staging, as per Dr. Martin Candle in the Dharma Initiative orientation training films.

As in a dream, I suspect absolutely everything present has some sort of symbolic meaning and significance. While possible there could be so many different overlaps and points of agreement between the one and the other, this seems unlikely to be so by product of pure random chance. I wonder if back in 2001 the creators of LOST ate a platter full of brownies, experienced a major case of the munchies, ate a huge "special" mushroom omelet, then watched "Frontier Psychiatrist" over and over again for hours while digesting in a trance state. That would sure have done it ...and if so, then in true LOST fashion they might not even realize how and why Frontier Psychiatrist and LOST are causally connected to one another.

Jeff Jensen's EW Review of "The Shape of Things to Come"

I love this guy's take on things...

Raiders of the 'Lost' Story Arc

Exactly two years from now, when ''Lost'' is in the home stretch of its final season, I have no doubt that the editors here will suggest the nifty idea of setting the stage for the show's climactic arc with (what else?) a list. In fact, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to sneak into my secret room (sorry: can't let you in) and confirm this inevitable assignment by popping into the future using my own wormhole-powered Quantum Leapster. Just let me set the controls and follow the directions on my ancient hieroglyphic tablet here and...BZZZZZZ-BLINK. Bingo! There I am, sitting at my desk on April 25, 2010, typing up the list, just as I expected (except for the part where I'm actually employed by Wood Cabinetry Weekly; what the hell happened to me?), and there it is, sitting very high on this ranking of all-time pivotal Lost moments, the scene that we all witnessed in last night's episode: Ben's shell-shocked reaction to the assassination of his adopted daughter, Alex: ''He changed the rules.'' As for No. 1 on the list, that would be season 5's revelation that Jack is actually...BZZZZZZZ-BLINK. Damn! My frakking Quantum Leapster ran out of juice! Stupid alien technology! Maybe next week....

Of course, the irony of my fantastical scenario lies in the profound significance of Alex's death. The future has become unknowable and unreliable — at least as far as the once great and powerful Oz of the Others, is concerned. ''He changed the rules,'' muttered Ben, his battered and bloodied face dawning with horrifying awareness. ''He'' is Charles Widmore, the man on the other side of the cosmic chessboard to which fate-whipped Ben is shackled. And in ''The Shape of Things to Come'' — the ninth episode of Lost's fourth season — the whiskey-soused, nightmare-plagued billionaire Brit made a desperate, most unexpected move against Ben in his mad bid to gain (or is that regain?) that which was once his in the past, or (buckle up for this one, kids) that which was supposed to be his in the future.

P
L
O
O
O
O
OOOOOOOOOOOOOP.

(That was your brain sliding out your head and onto the floor, wasn't it? Don't worry. It gets slightly less ridiculous from here.) (Maybe.)

Benjamin...Benjamin of Araaaaaaabia!

''The Shape of Things to Come'' was one of those deliciously dense episodes in which the nourishment of revelation is mixed with huge chunks of sugary intrigue. Case in point: Ben's flash-forward, a kind of Indiana Jones tale — that is, if said tale focused exclusively on that evil idol-swiping rogue Rene Belloq. It began in the Sahara, where King Other suddenly (but perhaps not unexpectedly) found himself lying in the broiling North African sand, suffering from a bloody wound on his arm (also unexplained) and wearing a borrowed Dharma Initiative-issued winter parka. Was that a gust of frigid air we saw escape his mouth? I thought so. If Ben can bend space and time like our friend Hiro Nakamura — and this episode was studded with clues suggesting he has the means to do so — perhaps moments before doing the old squishy-blinky he was hanging with Penelope's geologists in the Arctic Circle. Or building a snowman with Henry Gale in Minnesota! Time to brush off my Heroes/Lost theory....

Seriously, I think we are looking at some kind of time-warping teleportation hoo-ha here. The name on Ben's Dharma jacket merits investigation: ''Halliwax.'' If you've seen the Internet-distributed orientation video for the Orchid, a Dharma station not yet seen in the show (but it will be — soon), you know it was narrated by the latest incarnation of Marvin Candle/Mark Wickmund, one Edgar Halliwax. You are probably also aware that the popular speculation is that the Orchid was conducting teleportation and/or time-travel experiments, perhaps using polar bears as guinea pigs. Did Ben launch himself into the Sahara from Dharma's own Quantum Leapster? And when? Is that where Ben disappeared to when he ducked behind his glyph door? Or is his time traveling yet to come?

Like Ben, I'm getting ahead of myself. After dispatching two gun-toting Bedouins on horseback, Ben wearily trekked to Tozeur, Tunisia. (Famous denizens: Aboul-Qacem Echebbi, a poet whose famed poem ''To the Tyrants of the World'' sounds like it was written for Charles Widmore.) Like Peter O'Toole walking out of the desert in Lawrence of Arabia, Ben walked into a hotel dusty and parched and checked in under his On the Road-inspired alias, Dean Moriarty. How often has Ben been here? He claimed that he was a ''preferred guest,'' and the clerk's nervous eyes confirmed that he was either an important client or a really notorious one. Oh, no! Not the guy who whizzes on the walls again! She was also a tad baffled when Ben fished for the correct date. It was October 24, 2005. I'll let you guys research the date for illuminating connections, although I can't resist noting that (1) October 24 is Take Back Your Time Day, appropriate to this season's time-travel themes, and (2) October 24, 1593, is the day in which a Spanish soldier named Gil Perez ''suddenly appeared'' in Mexico City, claiming that he had just teleported from the Philippines. Believe it...or noooooot. (My Jack Palance needs some work, huh?)

Of course, we must note here that Lost has once before brought us to Tunisia. Flash back to ''Confirmed Dead,'' when freighter folkster Charlotte Lewis discovered the Hydra-station tag at an archaeological dig — the one that turned up a polar-bear skeleton. In my ''Confirmed Dead'' TV Watch, I wondered if Dharma was using polar bears as guinea pigs in its time/space-warping experiments. But given the implication that Ben is something of a frequent visitor to Tozeur, I wonder if he's the conniving agent responsible for the skeleton. After all, there is the increasingly popular theory — well promulgated in this space over the years — that dark forces have been manipulating the lives of the castaways so that they would wind up on the Island for the purpose of preserving (or destroying) the current timeline. Certainly the freighter folk could have been similarly manipulated; did Ben plant that dead polar bear in the desert to facilitate a future in which Charlotte came to the Island? Time will tell.

After Tozeur, globe-trotting Ben bummed it to Iraq, which also happens to provide a crucial setting for the book from which this episode took its title: H.G. Wells' 1933 novel The Shape of Things to Come, a work of speculative sci-fi in which a technologically oriented cabal based in Basra attempts to foist its notion of world-state utopia upon the planet. (Wells also penned a screen adaptation, 1936's Things to Come, in case you believe that investigating a moldy movie for Lost resonance is easier than reading a moldy book.) What brought Ben to Iraq? Giving flash-forward Sayid his avenging-angel makeover. We discovered that early in his off-Island Oceanic 6 life, Sayid reunited with lost love Nadia and married her. Alas, shortly before the events of this episode, she was killed, and according to Ben, the murderer was an assassin in the employ of Charles Widmore. Ben's pursuit of this Widmore pawn was merely an elaborate setup designed to manipulate Sayid into wanting to become his dark-knight avenger — confirmation of and payoff to Sayid's cryptic assertion in the climactic twist ending to ''The Economist.'' But the revelation here is that both master and servant — the Darth Sidious and Darth Maul of Lost — are motivated by deep personal loss. With just a few scenes to execute this business in a busy-busy episode, Michael Emerson and Naveen Andrews did some really nice work selling us on everything we needed to know and feel about their angry, bloody alliance. (Coincidence or conspiracy? Bob Kane — creator of pop culture's most famous heartbreak-spawned dark knight, Batman — was born in 1915 on...October 24.)

There Will Be Blood. And Smokey, Too!

Ben's V for Vendetta motivations were established in his part of the episode's Island-present story, in which Widmore's freighter mercenaries stormed New Otherton determined to abduct their boss' nemesis. I liked the comedic touches: the high-stakes game of Risk (Sawyer's foolish if successful play for Siberia foreshadowed Ben's mad and unsuccessful gambit to save Alex); the ringing phone signaling the deactivation of the sonic fence (''I think it's for Ben''); the ringing doorbell bringing Miles Straume into the action. (I was also amused to learn Ben was hiding a shotgun in his piano bench; so much for being under house arrest.) The action was intense; lots of redshirts got wasted, while Claire's house was obliterated by a rocket, though Aaron's mama herself survived. Kinda hard to believe, but I rolled with it. (FYI: A scene in which Claire experienced a hallucination/prophetic vision was shot for this episode but cut for lack of running time, but I'm told we can expect Claire intrigue to ramp up next week.)

The death of Alex was hardcore. Clearly, the girl's executioner, Keamy, didn't want to pull the trigger, despite his vaunted Ugandan badassery. My take on what happened is this: Papa Linus — hoping Keamy wouldn't have the stones to kill Alex if it gained him nothing — tried to convince him that his adopted daughter, kidnapped from ''an insane woman'' out of pity, really did mean nothing to him. It was a moment reminiscent of the coldhearted father-son square-off in the final act of There Will Be Blood. (I will spoil no further if you haven't seen it.) Keamy put a bullet in the back of Alex's head, anyway. Ben was devastated, naturally, but there was more to his soul-rocked shock than the mere sight of Alex's murder. My interpretation of ''He changed the rules'' wasn't so much Widmore and I agreed to wage our battle according to a certain set of limitations and regulations, but rather, simply This was not supposed to happen. As I've long insisted, I believe Ben's genius is derived from having knowledge of future events, via time travel, Desmond-esque precognitive flashes, or the other hot conjecture of the moment, time-loop theory, the idea that Ben has lived this life many times before. So a monkey wrench like this pretty much wrecks Ben's entire game.

Then came the episode's other soon-to-launch-a-thousand-theories scene, not to mention what might be one of the most important ''Easter eggs'' Lost has ever planted. After yanking himself out of his stupor, Ben retreated to his secret room, the Island's wizard scurrying behind his curtain to consult his gizmos and magic for answers. Shutting out Locke and company, Ben opened a wooden door carved with all sorts of hieroglyphics — similar to the ones on the countdown timer in the Hatch — and disappeared down a secret passage. As it happens, when I visited the set of Lost a few weeks ago during the filming of this episode, I stumbled on the glyph door.

But where did Ben go? For now, I'm going to side with what is certain to be the popular conjecture: that he crawled into the Island underworld and asked Smokey the hellhound to eat that bad man who killed his daughter. His ash-covered clothes would seem to confirm that. So would the fearlessness and glee on his face as Smokey indeed thrashed the freighter mercs to death in the most spectacular display of Smokeyness the show has ever given us; it reminded me of the God storm unleashed upon the Nazis at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. While all of this seems almost too obvious to be true, for the moment I can't come up with any alternative theories, but if we were to find out that Ben's hidden corridor leads to the Dharma Quantum Leapster (created, no doubt, using instructions decoded from that glyph door), and that in the five minutes he was absent from Locke and company he did weeks if not months of off-Island traveling (and grieving, regrouping, and re-strategizing) before coming back focused, strong, and empowered with the necessary knowledge to defeat his enemies, well, it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Island...

Jack wobbled around the beach, sick; the freighter doctor washed up in the surf, throat slit; Faraday telegraphed the freighter and told the castaways that all was cool, that the choppers were coming to rescue them in the morning; Bernard, who can decipher Morse code, busted Faraday for lying, revealing that what the freaky physicist was actually told was that the freighter doctor was still on the boat, alive and well; and Jack, finally resigning himself to the fact that Locke was right and he was wrong about the freighter folk, asked the question that promises to finally galvanize his season 4 story line: ''Were you ever going to take us off of this island?'' Faraday broke his heart: ''No.''

I'm sticking to basics here, as I happen to know more than I can tell; reporting our recent feature story made me privy to upcoming developments in the Jack Camp arc, and I find it hard to analyze and theorize without betraying what I know. More on this next week.

(Fun Fact! The first U.S. transcontinental telegraph line was finished on — yep — October 24, 1861.)

London Calling

In the episode's final moments, Ben paid a visit to Charles Widmore at his London home in the middle of the night. Ben blasted his enemy for killing his daughter. Widmore — who has taken to self-medicating with MacScotch as a result of nightmares — blasted right back, saying it was Ben's own damn fault that Alex was dead. ''We both know very well that I didn't murder her at all, Benjamin....You have the audacity to pretend you're the victim....I know who you are, boy! What you are. I know everything you have you took from me....That island's mine, Benjamin. It always was. It will be again.'' Ben then dared him to find it — right after pledging to get even with his game-changing opponent by killing his daughter, too: none other than Desmond's sweetie, Penelope.

Widmore's cryptic comments will no doubt be as debated as the glyph door. My interpretation returns us to the beginning. Ben and Widmore seem to be engaged in a war — a war for the Island, a war over time itself. For a long time, Ben was winning that war by either facilitating or managing a new timeline of events, one that denies Widmore his predestined life — a life that may have been ruinous for the entire world. But victory for Ben hinges on knowing or at least anticipating the future — and with Alex's unforeseeable death, it appears Ben has become omnisciently challenged. Once, he was able to see the shape of things to come. Now, the future is as hazy as Smokey himself.

And with that — PLOOOP! I turn it over to you. What did you see? What are your theories? Why do you think it's so important to Ben that Locke stay alive? What do you think is ailing Jack? Go!

Lost and Found: Scads of Scoopy Nuggets! - Spoilerish, but not really

From Tv Guide:

"Team Darlton" (aka exec producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse) on Thursday afternoon treated the press to a conference call teasing Lost's April 24 return as well as the now three-hour finale. Before I dive into the full transcript, some nuggets to tide you over:

On the season finale:
"There's No Place Like Home" — which the boys just finished writing this past Monday and are now polishing/starting to shoot — kicks off Thursday, May 15 (at 10 pm/ET), and then continues with Parts 2 and 3, airing May 29, from 9 to 11.

On the fate of the Sawyer/Kate/Jack triangle:
"All we can say is that Sawyer is not one of the Oceanic Six, and Jack and Kate are," notes Lindelof. "Obviously there will be a huge focus in the finale in terms of how that series of events transpires and what ultimately happens to Sawyer, and it's all on the axis of the love triangle. We think that both fans of Sawyer and Kate — otherwise known as the 'Skaters,' I am told — and Jack and Kate, the 'Jaters,' will have a bounty of interesting romance scenes."

On Jack and Juliet:
"We will be revisiting the emotional idea of [their big March 6 kiss] and their relationship in our second episode back, which airs on May 1," says Lindelof.

On buzz that Claire's days are very numbered:
"We don't really want to comment on any particular character's fate," Cuse defers. "Suffice it to say, there are some very compelling events involving Claire that will take place between now and the season finale."

On the prospect of any non-Oceanix Sixer being killed off soon:
"It's always a tricky thing when it comes to talking about death on the show," Cuse told TVGuide.com. "If we were to tease a death, like when Shannon died, it leads everybody to chase it down and spoil it. On the other hand, if we were to say that everybody is safe, that would ruin the dramatic impact of the finale. So, we're excited about what's happening and there are definitely some very large and seismic events that will happen to our castaways between now and the end of the season. By the end of the season, some people's fates will be clear, and others will not be so clear."

On a new between-seasons online experience:
"We loved Find815[.com]," says Cuse, "and hope to do a similar thing where there will be an online prologue that leads into Season 5."

On their plans for Comic-Con:
"Last year we showed the Orchid [orientation] video, which is going to pay off in a big way in the season finale this year," says Lindelof. Similarly: "We would love to give the Comic-Con fans an advance first look at what we have planned for Season 5."

On Jeff Fahey:
Expect to see "a lot more" of the freighter's weathered 'copter pilot as the season wraps up. Fahey, interestingly, was plucked away from working at an orphanage in Kabul, Afghanistan, when Lost came calling.

On Seasons 5 and 6:
Since this season delivered just 14 out of 16 planned episodes, the next two rounds will indeed get boosted to 17 episodes each.

On the series' very last scene:
"The last line of dialogue, we have a little bit of wiggle room. But the last scene has definitely been determined," says Lindelof. "There would have to be some major sort of shift in both our mindsets to back off that. That’s what we've been working towards for a couple of years now, even before the [May 2010] end date was announced."

On the number of people who know about that final scene:
Outside of "Darlton" and J.J. Abrams? "Not a lot," says Lindelof. "You can sort of count them all on one hand. But if we were to disclose the names of any others, they might be kidnapped and taken off to Central America and tortured." Adds Cuse, "We told Dick Cheney because we were pretty sure nobody would be able to find him and get the secret from him."

Someone's Hot Theory

This is a very long, very smart theory!
